Call it what you want: stuff, clutter, mess, excess, etc. Clutter is clutter, no matter how you slice it. Whether the area is neat and clean or not, clutter is an external manifestation of your inner being. The problem with clutter is that subconsciously it is a distraction. It is a sign that there is no discipline or pattern to keep things organized. It often mirrors our own thoughts: a messy or cluttered desk or room is a sign of a cluttered mind. I find that people with clutter around them have more difficulty focusing on certain tasks because they are often distracted by the clutter around them. Clean up the mess, externally, and you clean up your concentration, internally. By spending just a few extras seconds, really, seconds, to clean up after ourselves by organizing things behind us, we can literally save dozens of minutes, if not hours everyday in having to come back and clean up later.
