Five years ago, MUMS (Mothers Uplifting Mothers) was organized in Bridgeton by a group of Mothers in Cumberland and later Salem Counties who have lost children to gun violence. The purpose of Mums is to hold, create, and share a space for mutual healing.
It was almost serendipity that the women found Karen Barnett, Director of the Bridgeton Municipal Alliance – Youth to Youth Program, who found ways to honor every woman’s experience, and helped in organizing and developing MUMS.
Greenwich Friends Meeting and Salem Quarterly Meeting invited all Friends to join MUMS and Karen Barnett at the Greenwich Friends Lower Meetinghouse for an afternoon program to listen and affirm the women’s stories, bear witness to the road they are traveling and become part of their healing journey.

American Quakerism changed dramatically in the antebellum era owing to both internal and external forces, including schism, industrialization, western migration, and reform activism. With the “Great Separation” of the 1820s and subsequent divisions during the 1840s and 1850s, new Quaker sects emerged. Some maintained the quietism of the previous era; others became more austere; still others were heavily influenced by American evangelicalism and integration into modern culture.

“What is justice? What does it really look like? What does the phrase “restorative justice” mean and how it is practiced?
What is lost and what is gained? what does it mean to begin to heal the world through small steps? How do we slow down, cast away fear of the other, and truly see the real person?
How do we break out of the same old conversation? How do we forgive ourselves and each other?
Thank you to Woodstown for hosting and Greenwich for arranging the program.

“Justice is a noun. But doing justice is a verb. As a prosecutor, I need to ensure that what we’re doing is fair, that people have confidence in our system, that it’s working well, and that it serves everyone”
