  • HELL ON EARTH
CLIMATE ACTION SHOW NOVEMBER 7TH 2022Produced by Vivien Langford H E L L  O N  E A R T HAccording to Australian Climate Scientist Professor  Will Steffen, we are risking billions of deaths and hell on earth. Tipping points are tipping and this generation will determine the fate of life on earth in all its bio-diversity. Let's convince Super funds that there is nothing better to invest your money in than the continuity of life. Tell them how to vote at the next bank AGM.  Guests :Pablo Brait  - Market Forces- https://www.marketforces.org.au/were-your-retirement-savings-used-to-block-climate-action/Fahimah, Chris, Bubbly and Manjot -  Move Beyond Coal - https://www.movebeyondcoal.com/who_we_areNaomi Klein - The Intercept on Cop 27 https://theintercept.com/2022/10/04/cop27-egypt-climate-summit/https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/18/greenwashing-police-state-egypt-cop27-masquerade-naomi-klein-climate-crisisIneza Grace from Rwanda - The African COP -https://theelders.org/news/loss-and-damage-financing-will-mean-there-hope-climate-justiceMusic from Egypt - Oum Kalthoum and Birdsong from BotswanaNews from  Environs Kimberley and The Beetaloo Basin WHITEHAVEN AGM /MOVE BEYOND COALORIGIN MOVES SLIGHTLY AWAY FROM GASThe Climate Action groups co operating with Move Beyond Coal are  the best of civil society. Some of those working for years to alert  us to the danger of new coal and gas projects  are 350 Pacific, Pacific Climate Warriors , lock the gate alliance, School strike4Climate, SAPNA South Asian  Climate Solidarity, Green Left, Doctors for the Environment, ARRCC, The sum of us and many more. They gathered outside The Mint in Sydney on Oct 26th for the Whitehaven Coal Company's AGM. Proxy shareholders inside proposed that Whitehaven use windfall profits  to manage down its mines and ensure the transition of the workforce. Later that day Market Forces sent us a message that MANY more shareholders this year supported the resoluion. Pablo Brait  explains  how this happened.Meanwhile Origin Energy is withdrawing from its gas exploration in the Kimberley WA according to Environs Kimberley and from the Beetaloo Basin in NT according to ABC.https://www.environskimberley.org.au/https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-20/nt-origin-quitting-beetaloo-project-may-signal-gas-decline/101454668 As Pablo says the trend away from coal at least is clear but it is all too slow. If  you are a member of a Superannuation Fund it will have shares in the big banks. It's a simple thing to ring your fund and ask them to support the Market Forces resolution at this year's AGM for NAB, Westpac or ANZ. • ROSS GARNAUT
CLIMATE  ACTION  SHOW  OCTOBER 31ST 2022Produced by Vivien Langford ROSS GARNAUT -  SUPERPOWER  TRANSFORMATIONKAY WENNAGEL  - ELECTRIC VEHICLE BULK BUY Guests ROSS GARNAUT -  Professor Emeritus in  Economics at Melbourne University. His new book isThe Superpower Transformation  - Making Australia's Zero Carbon Future.https://www.blackincbooks.com.au/books/superpower-transformationRoss sees two disruptive events this year. The election of the ALP in Australia and the disruption of oil and gas exports to Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine. He says "Europe hesitated then COMMITTED decisively to the new economy" Will Australia make the same committment? We talked about :Regional transformations, such as making agricultural UREA with green hydrogen instead of importing 92% from countries where it is produced using coal  or gas as feedstock. Industrial Transformations, such  as helping China lower its costs of decarbonisation by producing GREEN STEEL here with local iron ore. Methane Transformations by stopping subsidies to new coal and gas projects and mandating the strict prevention of FUGITIVE METHANE EMISSIONS from leaky pipes and mines. A more thorny problem for us, if we want to manufacture zero carbon goods with our superpower resources of wind and solar energy,  is how to extract the TRANSITION MINERALS  here and abroad without riding rough shod over precious ecosystems and sacred places? Ross argues that they are essential for  zero carbon modern medicine and modern life but as a quarry nation we have a huge responsibiliy NOT to continue extracting here and overseas in a damaging way. We did not discuss the alternatives of a post extractivist, steady state economics but we welcome any contributions next year to discuss this VITAL matter. Ross talks about the recent savaging of training for geophysics and mettalurgy specialists. Australia  once had a proud reputation in this field but more money now  goes to moon research  than to manage the use of the transition minerals so much in demand! He says the jobs summit made some headway but a lot more needs to be done to protect the environment and  insists that engaging  indigenous people at the forefront of these transformations is essential.https://www.neweconomy.org.au/nena-hubs/sector/post-extractivism/https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/inline-files/Jobs-and-Skills-Summit-Outcomes-Document.pdf     KAY WENNAGEL - interviewed by Michael Staindl. The ballad was discovered among a collection of papers relating to the strike by a studious Lancashire miner, J.S. Bell. The tune was supplied by J. Dennison, of Walker and, together with the text, can be found in A.L. Lloyd’s Come All Ye Bold Miners.A challenge to listeners to send us the ballads of Green Extractivism - the songs of the species. • ON THE ROAD TO SHARM EL SHEIKH- Loss and damage
CLIMATE ACTION SHOW24TH OCTOBER 2022Produced by Vivien LangfordON THE ROAD TO SHARM EL SHEIKHLOSS AND DAMAGE AND FOSSIL FUEL NON PROLIFERATION FOR COP27 The Financial Times ' Camilla Hodgsen reports that "Many developing countries, such as the low-lying Pacific island states vulnerable to sea level rise, are stepping up their demands. They want to see the creation of an international loss and damage finance facility — a type of fund — at November’s COP27 UN summit, hosted by Egypt. “Wealthier countries bear a moral responsibility” to help poorer nations recover, adapt and build resilience to disasters, said António Guterres, UN secretary-general on Friday. “Let’s not forget that 80 per cent of emissions driving this type of climate destruction are from the G20.”The ARRCC multifaith Climate event at Parramatta Cathedral called on  Prime Minister Albanese to support the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty at Cop 27. To stop subsidies to fossil fuel producers and to prevent new coal and gas projects.Maria Timon  talks to us about her sacred places in Kiribati, including a cemetery now under water. She spoke about the repeated diplomatic pleas from Pacific Nations for Australia to stop fuelling climate disaster. This event was echoed all around the worldIn Indonesia, activists are biking across the country calling for an end to coal! In France, communities of faith will come together to boldly call for TotalEnergies to Stop Tilenga Oil Field and Stop EACOP. In Port Harcourt, Nigeria, faith leaders hosted a dialogue on gas flaring and visited communities bearing the burden of crude oil extraction. "We can't drink oil!" Despite intimidation and threats, 200+ people of various faiths took action in Uganda and Tanzania to stop the EACOP and Tilenga oil megaproject, calling out Total Energies and the governments involvedPeople of Diverse Faiths Call for an End to EACOP | GreenFaith Paul Newman speaks to us about really caring for country. The Venerable Bhante Sujato meditates with staff at CSIRO. He speaks of the distress they feel, giving  the the most accurate information to governments only to see insufficient action in response. Children are distressed too and he says No wonder. "We have burnt their future". His challenge to us is to recognise that we have created this world of emissions and not to see ourselves as victims of circumstance. We talk to Dorothy Guerrereo from Global Jutice Now about her parents in the Philippines moving twice to escape ever greater flooding in this most vulnerable nation of islands. She will report to us after attending the COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh and her hope is that the finances by then will be flowing.Paying for loss and damage is one sort of financing.Paying for the transition to energy efficient buildings, and renewable energy infrastructure is another. GuestsDorothy Guerrereo - Global Justice Now https://www.globaljustice.org.uk/event/cop27-climate-justice-mobilisations/https://www.quaker.org.uk/blog/silence-and-hope-a-witness-to-the-impact-of-climate-breakdown Paul Newman - Wiradjuri Elder speaking at Parramatta Cathedral https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/781887/EXT5218_Yarramundi_Lecture_GOK_Book_Paul.pdf Ven Bhante Sujato - Senior Theravadan Monk from The monastery at the end of the world.https://lokanta.github.io/ Maria Timon  - Pacific Calling Partnership.https://www.erc.org.au/pcp_values Music : Sent to us by Dorothy this is a song from the Philippines :Magkaugnay (Artist: Joey Ayala) – this song celebrates biodiversity and the interconnected of humans and nature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qESfxmQgYoU

  • F.O.E. RUSSIA and SIBERIA MELTING
CLIMATE  ACTION  SHOW October 17th 2022produced by Vivien LangfordF.O.E. RUSSIA AND SIBERIA MELTING  "The first-ever climate lawsuit in Russia has been filed by a group of activists demanding that the the government take stronger action over the climate crisis. The group wants the Russian authorities to take measures that will reduce the country’s greenhouse emissions, in line with targets of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5C agreed under the 2015 Paris climate accords.Russia is the fourth biggest producer of carbon emissions worldwide, and its average temperatures have risen twice as fast as the global average. The country’s emissions are predicted to reach 2,212m tons of carbon dioxide by 2030." Waseem Mohamed - The Guardian We learn from Vitaly Servetnik that emissions from the oil and gas pipelines from Russia into Europe are greatly adding to Russia's status as fourth greatest emitter. Like Australia they have often received the Colossal Fossil award at UN conferences. But unlike in Australia, climate action in Russia is very risky. Vitaly tells us how they spent a year and a half talking to the great number of environmental groups to build a case for the Russian Government to radically change its climate policies and save thousands of lives.  GUESTSVitaly Servetnik - Russian Social Ecological Union/ Friends of the Earth Russiahttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/sep/13/first-climate-lawsuit-russia-emissions https://foeasiapacific.org/2022/09/16/russia-activists-file-first-climate-change-lawsuit/ https://rusecounion.ru/eng https://rusecounion.ru/eng/eng_publication  Angelina Davydova -Prominent Russian Environmental journalist -interviewed by James Whitmore (2020)Her most recent comments since the invasion of Ukraine forced her into exile.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DD1sLgO5k0  Music : A Siberian song by Otyken called Storm.https://otyken.ru/?lang=en#:~:text=%D0%9Etyken%20is%20a%20Siberian%20indigenous,arrangement%20will%20definitely%20entertain%20you! More about the Saami people who are part of the group taking Russia's government to court for destruction of their future. The Sámi are the only recognized Indigenous people within the European Union. • LOSS AND DAMAGE and MOVING BEYOND COAL
CLIMATE ACTION SHOW - SEPTEMBER 26TH 2022PRODUCED BY VIVIEN LANGFORDLOSS AND DAMAGE AND MOVING BEYOND COAL As we move towards COP 27 in Egypt the focus is on loss and damage. Since Cop 26 failed to deliver the finance to countries reeling from climate breakdown we have had more extreme events. Think Lismore floods with all its images of loss and then multiply that for Pakistan when over 7 million have been displaced. Then the  relentless drought in Mexico,China and Somalia plus heatwaves in Europe. Yet emissions are rising and  people all over the world are protesting. One urgent message is to stop  fossil fuel subsidies, bank finances and new projects . The other urgent message is to provide finance for countries devastated by loss and damage. As Dr Saleemul Huq tells Nick Breeze ""Vulnerable Countries Left Glasgow with Tears In Their Eyes". We  need to mobilise our government to defend their rights at the next conference. The Secretary General of the UN after visiting Pakistan's flooded provinces says they are drowning not only in water but in debt and need debt relief as a matter of urgency. Meanwhile, a new coalition of climate action groups called MOVE BEYOND COAL has launched the "Not one more dollar" campaign. They are targetting NAB branches to persuade them they have no social licence to  bankroll Whitehaven Coal Co. From London we hear about tactics from Extinction Rebellion. They have had seasons of stopping the traffic and now they are door knocking and building a groundswell of people to shift the dial on lethargic and insufficient climate action. According to  Erica Cherowyth who has infuenced their tactics: “Numbers really matter for building power in ways that can really pose a serious challenge or threat to entrenched authorities or occupations,” Chenoweth says – and nonviolent protest seems to be the best way to get that widespread support.Once around 3.5% of the whole population has begun to participate actively, success appears to be inevitable. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world  Guests:Fahimah Badrulhisham - ARRCC and Move Beyond Coal campaignerMove Beyond Coal  and  https://www.arrcc.org.au/ Introducing the Not one more dollar campaign to adopt ypour local NAB branch and persuade them they have no social licence to lend to Whitehaven Coal Co. Dr Saleemul Huq and Nick Breeze from Climate Genn on Loss and Damage "Vulnerable Countries Left Glasgow with Tears In Their Eyes" says Professor Saleemul HuqNick Breeze from UK says  "If ,as Saleem says, the rich countries continue to bully the poorer nations while consuming the remaining carbon budgets, then our own moral integrity is what is in question. • AUSTRALIA'S GREEN EXTRACTIVISM AND SACRIFICE ZONES ABROAD
CLIMATE ACTION RADIO SHOW  - SEPTEMBER 19TH 2022 Produced by Vivien LangfordAUSTRALIA'S GREEN EXTRACTIVISM AND  SACRIFICE ZONES  ABROAD? While  the climate  movement focusses on  going beyond coal, oil and gas, big business is driving a rush for  the rare earths and critical minerals needed for the transition to  Renewable energy with  storage. The Australian Mining Industry  claims to have standards that are world's best  practice. However, sacrifice zones are already being created  as they mine for  Lithium in WA and Copper in SA. What  will be the environmental consequences on our water  and how will they deal with radioactive waste?  Overseas,  Malaysians are protesting the radioactive waste from Australian Rare  earths processed over there  by Lynas. In Ecuador, the front line is to protect a cloud forest  of immense biodiversity from Gina  Rinehart's copper mining. In  Chile  they wanted a new constitution that  would have placed restrictions on mining making it more expensive to do business. When the constitution was rejected the headline in  Canada was "Business  can  now continue for  Canadian mines based in Chile".  The urgency to  decarbonise must not   allow mining companies and governments to greenwash themselves while leaving behind new areas of devastastion... the  same sort of sacrifice zones we know from fossil fuels extraction. There  is an exponential growth in demand  eg  300-700% for Lithium used in batteryb storage.https://aidwatch.org.au/alternatives-to-green-extractivism/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLV3KalvfFs Duncan Wood - Wilson Centre on the Geopolitics of critical minerals We explore the alternatives with our guests Guests:Federico Fuentes -  talking about Lithium in Chile and Copper in Brazil. He is  a Green Left Journalist and Author of  America's Turbulent Transitions - Liz Downes -  Talking about Green Extractiviusm  from Rainforest Action Group :https://rainforestactiongroup.org/in-the-news/ Scroll down and note the number of 3CR programmes that have been covering this story in Ecuador. Natalie Lowery -  Explaining Degrowth and what's at stake. • THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT GREEN OPTIMISM
CLIMATE ACTION RADIO SHOW  SEPTEMBER 12th 2022Produced by Vivien Langford THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT GREEN OPTIMISM I was alerted to the new gold rush for critical minerals by Gavin Mudd, Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at RMIT University. We must not make the transition to renewable energy and electrifying everything without putting far more regulation on global mining. As Carlos Zorilla says from Ecuador"The voices calling for careful considerations of the impacts of a transition to ‘clean’ energy are drowned by the misplaced optimism of a green future. Few are asking commonsense questions that, if not answered now could easily create a worse environmental disaster later – and even compound the climate crisis. The elephant in the room few want to acknowledge is the destruction of people and the environment that will result from the hunger for so-called green energy minerals – mainly copper, cobalt, nickel and lithium."In Chile Lithium is called the "white gold" Lithium Mining Is Leaving Chile’s Indigenous Communities High and Dry (Literally) | NRDCand in Ecuador   our own Gina Rinehart is determined to extract copper from a fragile mountainous cloud forest.Rinehart's Roadblock in Ecuador - Friends of the Earth Australia (foe.org.au)Meanwhile the Climate Campaigners focussed on  stopping  new coal exports from Australia are very grateful to the Wangan and Jagalingou people. The Adani Carmichael mine is 9 months into operation with a huge slag heap rising up off their land and underground water already being sucked out to wash the coal. But they are not lying down on the rail tracks. Their dignified year long Waddanangu Ceremony is attracting indigenous and other visitors from all over the country.W&J have shown their intent to continue the ceremony and take their land back - you can sign up as a monthly donor to keep the sacred fire burning here. Moving news from EcuadorCarlos Zorilla won the Equator prize for  the protection, restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems that help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. He speaks to us from the Cloud Forest in Ecuador where  they are protecting  a wonderland of biodiversity. They have made two foreign mining companies back down but now are defending their land against the ravenous appetite for critical minerals used in electric vehicles and all the machinery of the renewables transition we have to make. One of the companies HANRINE is connected to Australian Gina Rinehart. Carlos Zorrilla | The EcologistThe dirty truth about clean energy by Carlos Zorrilla — Local Futures | by Local Futures | Local Futures — Economics of Happiness | Medium Thrilling news from Colombia: New anti extractivist Government promises strong climate action. The Vice President  Francia Marquez is already a veteran environmental warrior. It sounded like a summit.Mining extracts gigalitres of water, leaved horrendous slag heaps and black voids. If the land rights laws lack teeth to prevent this, Coedie Mc Avoy and the Wangan and Jagalingou people are using the Human rights laws to occupy parts of their land for ceremony. Coral also talks about what she learned about the sacredness of this land. Trees where a person's placenta was buried become that person's responsibility. Imagine if all Australians were initiated into this level of care!On the eve of the anniversary a special First Nations panel was held on Wangan and Jagalingou Country to discuss the theme of resilience and reoccupation with some incredible speakers: Gwenda Stanley Gomeroi Cultural Ambassador - Tent Embassy, Josie Alec, Kuruma Marthudhunera Custodian, Burrup peninsula, DK- Fresh Water Yuggera man, Deebing creek (who have been reoccupying their homelands for 1000 days) and Wangan and Jagalingou Tribal elder Adrian Burragubba.
