Today, I’m joined by Dr. Ngonidzashe Chirinda, a climate change scientist at the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture in Colombia. He is a lead author for the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. His current research is on developing and evaluating feasible climate change mitigation options in agriculture. During the past 15 years, he has worked in Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. He is originally from Zimbabwe.

Sometimes when we talk about climate change and the need to replace fossil fuels with clean energy, what we don’t realize is that we’re making big decisions on very little information. We can protest, march and demand changes but if we are not armed with detailed knowledge, it’s kind of like skydiving without a parachute. We may unknowingly be asking for something that could cause more harm, economically unsound, politically unachievable or simply naive.

Today, I’m joined by Frostee Rucker, an American football defensive lineman entering his 13th season in the NFL who is currently in his first season with the Oakland Raiders. He is a well-respected veteran defensive end and most recently played five seasons for the Arizona Cardinals. He played college football at USC, and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Rucker has also played for the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals.

According to a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications, the researchers concluded that Hurricane María tripled tree breaks and doubled tree mortality relative to other major storms. Tree inventories and a wind exposure model showed that the differences in impacts is due to storm meteorology. The study warns that stronger hurricanes will decimate forests and accelerate climate change.

Today, I’m joined by Dr. Masaō Ashtine, Lecturer at the University of the West Indies who is leading the renewable energy research at the Mona Campus in Jamaica. He is also the co-founder of the Journal of Caribbean Environmental Sciences and Renewable Energy. His research is centerd around environmental sciences, with a specific focus on renewable energy and climate change. At the Department of Physics, his current work is within energy meteorology where he is investigating the impacts of climate change on renewable energy systems, incorporating machine learning techniques that can be used to better model these systems.
