  • Does AMOC Collapse Depend on Rate of Warming? with René van Westen
In this Climate Chat episode, we interview returning guest René van Westen on his latest Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) research that shows that AMOC collapse depends not on the amount of warming but rather the *rate* of warming. Dr. Westen is a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

  • The Biology of Collapse with George Tsakraklides
In this Climate Chat episode, we interview scientist, activist and author George Tsakraklides about his book, The Biology of Collapse.
George Tsakraklides is an author, Substack writer, and interdisciplinary commentator with an educational background spanning molecular biology, chemistry, food sciences, and Earth sciences, alongside two decades of experience in corporate data analytics and marketing. He has authored numerous works of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry—including The Biology of Collapse: Lessons from Nature on Growth, Power, Extinction and Rebirth, Beyond the Petri Dish, The Unhappiness Machine, and Frankenpolitics.
His core perspective draws direct parallels between natural biological systems and human socioeconomic structures. He heavily critiques endless economic growth as an unsustainable, terminal pathology, while frequently challenging mainstream political reform and the efficacy of traditional technological mitigation strategies.

He is a founding principal investigator of the Climate Impact Lab, a multi-institutional collaboration advancing data-driven approaches to estimating the social and human costs of climate change. He is also co-lead for engagement and applications for the NASA Sea-Level Change Team. He was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recent (2021) Sixth Assessment Report.  He has previously served at Rutgers as Director of the Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and as co-director of the University Office of Climate Action. Professor Kopp received his Ph.D. in Geobiology from the California Institute of Technology and his undergraduate degree in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago.  He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow.

  • What Happens to Our Food Supply When We Dim the Sun? with Brendan Clark
In this Climate Chat episode, host Dan Miller interviews Cornell atmospheric climate scientist Brendan Clark about his research on how Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM, a.k.a., solar geoengineering) will impact vegetation growth and agriculture. We will also discuss Brendan's recent paper on how global warming induced changes to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is slowing the growth of trees and reducing an important carbon sink.
Dr. Brendan Clark is an atmospheric scientist and Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cornell University who specializes in modeling climate intervention scenarios, specifically Stratospheric Aerosol Intervention (SAI). His research focuses on evaluating the regional trade-offs and agricultural impacts of solar geoengineering, simulating how altered temperature and sunlight patterns would affect global crop production, food security, and terrestrial ecosystems. A former graduate researcher at Rutgers University, he has authored prominent papers on these climate engineering variables, including a lead-author study in Nature Food examining how optimal climate intervention strategies vary by nation.
