Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Tom Vilsack, secretary of the US Department of Agriculture. As leader of the USDA, Secretary Vilsack is working to strengthen the American agricultural economy, build vibrant rural communities and create new markets for innovation of rural America Prior to his appointment, Vilsack served two terms as the Governor of Iowa, in the Iowa State Senate and as the mayor of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with James Conroy, who has been a trial lawyer in Boston for over 30 years, having first pursued a public affairs career in Washington, D.C. as a House and Senate press secretary, speechwriter, and chief of staff. In his first book, Our One Common Country: Abraham Lincoln and the Hampton Roads Peace Conference of 1865, Conroy explores the most critical meeting of the Civil War. He describes in great detail what happened when leaders from both sides came together in the only presidential peace mission in America’s wartime history to try and end the hostilities. Ultimately failing to come to an agreement, the War would drag on for two more months. Conroy argues that the failure of the Hampton Roads Conference shaped the course of American history and the future of America’s wars to come.

Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Alana Semuels, who is a journalist for The Atlantic and previously a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. In November of 2015, Semuels wrote “How To Decimate a City,” which explored the history and impact of an elevated highway through Syracuse, New York. In the article, Semuels explores the idea that the city thought that by building a giant highway in the middle of town, it could be an economic powerhouse. Instead, it got a bad bout of white flight and the worst slum problem in America.

Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Sven Beckert, who is Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University. Beckert’s research and teaching center on the history of the United States in the nineteenth century, with a particular emphasis on the history of capitalism, including its economic, social, political and transnational dimensions. His publications have focused on the history of economic elites, on labor, on democracy and, in recent years, on the global history of capitalism. Beckert teaches courses on the history of American capitalism, Gilded Age America, the political economy of modern capitalism, labor history and global capitalism. He is co-chair of the Program on the Study of Capitalism at Harvard University, and the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History, also at Harvard. Beyond Harvard, he co-chairs an international study group on global history, is co-editor of a series of books at Princeton University Press on “America in the World,”and has co-organized a series of conferences on the history of capitalism. He has received many fellowships and awards, including the Newcomen Fellowship at Harvard Business School, and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. Beckert is a Guggenheim Fellow. He has lectured all over the world.

Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Amal Kassir, the daughter of an American mother and a Syrian father, who was raised in Denver but lived for many years in Syria. While living in Syria, she came to understand the suffering of the people there, especially rural farmers and children, while the freedoms she has living in the U.S. has allowed her to become an activist on their behalf. Now a college student in Denver, Kassir attends classes and works at her father’s Syrian restaurant during the week. On the weekends, she tours the United States performing her spoken word poetry at festivals and political rallies. In 2012, she won the Grand Slam prize at the Brave New Voices International Youth Competition for a poem called “Syria.” Her poetry often blends images of simple family pleasures in Syria with the contrasting harsh treatment of government soldiers, and over the last seven years of performing, the theme of Kassir’s poetry has evolved to a call of political and social justice.
