Opus 70 by Felix Mendelssohn. Edited and arranged by David Stocker.
ELIJAH, oratorio for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, opus 70.
In 1845, the Committee of the Birmingham Music Festival invited Mendelssohn to prepare a new oratorio for their season. The world premier took place in August 1846, with the composer conducting. The reception was overwhelming. Four choruses and four arias had to be encored. Since then, it has become a prime favorite with English audiences, second only to Handel's Messiah.
Elijah is in two sections--the first describes how the prophet brings on a drought in Israel to punish the people for deserting God for Baal. In the second, Elijah is hounded by enemies out to destroy him, but under the
protection of the Lord, he triumphs over them and in the end is carried aloft to heaven in a flaming chariot.
