It's that time of year again here in Dallas. In anticipation, I wanted to make the first mix I have ever done specifically for Pride. Normally with my mixes, I like to keep all the most as recent as possible. For this one -- being my first Pride-centric mix, I decided to break my own rules and sprinkle some older songs that always make me think of Pride. Some of these are even new remakes/remixes of older uplifting classics as well. I will say that I did not use any mix of a song I have used before. Since it's just so hot outside, I'm going to keep my ramblings brief. New dance releases have been somewhat slow since the last mix, but I finally felt like I had what I needed to do another one. There is a lot of fun stuff on this one, a few songs I had to edit, but I'm not going to run on about anything in particular. Just listen and enjoy. Like I needed another excuse for another mix? Yes, it's my birthday... today. And yes, I made a mix for it. And yes, I'm even on vacation and posting this. Haha. So, I thought a birthday mix would be fun, but instead of just choosing a bunch of favorite dance songs from my collection, I needed to limit that down. So here is the rule... it had to be a mix that I added to my library in the last year of my life, but wasn't necessarily new when I did (save one, which I'll get to in a minute). Now, before some of you say, "I can't believe that you didn't have THAT song" or whatever, realize that most of these I already had some mix of, but for whatever reason these stayed under my radar. Be it because at the time, I had another mix I really favored, maybe heard before but my taste has changed a little, or -- heaven forbid -- totally didn't know existed. Ha. So get ready for some MAJOR random, but I think you may find some gems on here as I did (or maybe one of them will give you memories from a happy time or person in your life, as many do for me). This mix doesn't follow my normal flow, in that it starts off bright and happy, goes a little dark in the middle, then comes back around again. Being that it's so random, it was tough to get the layout right, but I think it works best this way for this particular mix. A few notes on some songs... first of all... The Boss. I'm sorry Diana and Kristine, but I really heart this version of that song. Toni sounds fantastic and this mix works just right. Copacabana... yes I'm a Fanilow, but imagine my happiness when I ran across a Ralphi remix. Love it. Go Your Own Way... Fleetwood Mac... enough said, other than it's one of my favorite songs of theirs (well, and give Dave credit here... he kept it true to the original). As far as the Thunderpuss mixes... well, yeah, there really isn't excuse other than I've been trying to fill in some holes and how could I not have had these. I know, I know. Which brings me to Mariah Carey vs Fragma - Toca's Together (Rauhofer's Inpetto Mashup Chris "Needs a Miracle" Edit). Okay, so I first heard the Peter mash-up this year at Disney. It was about 6:30am at the last afterhours and Peter was spinning (and just workin' it... he was great). I had made my way to the middle of the dancefloor by that point (by myself, I should add) and was already in my own world dancing to his music, loving every minute. Then, I heard the hint of (what I thought to be) Toca's Miracle, which is one of my favorite dance songs. Then, however as the song played, it wasn't Coco at all, but Mariah. I absolutely fell in love with the mash-up he did -- considering I usually hate mash-ups -- but I kept thinking (as I danced) I felt like something was missing. That something, to me, was "a miracle". So I did a little mash-up of my own... a mash-up of his mash-up, so to speak, which I give you here as Chris's "Need A Miracle" Edit. Here is a video from that actual moment, of course aweful sound quality. Finally, and speaking of Disney, I finish with Olivia Newton-John - Xanadu (Chris's Sparkly OMP DMC Edit). I first heard this remix at Disney in 2007. It was the song that Roland used for the Fireworks at One Mighty Party and Xanadu has to be one of my "queen-out-moment" favorites. Now, this one violates my rule for the mix above (I didn't find it in the last year), but bless it's heart... I really worked hard two years ago on this edit after that experience to take the DMC remix of that song and make it make how "sparkly" the Disney experience was for me that year. A little chopping, speeding up, and some injection of extra sound effects and I think I got it. It was just dying for an excuse to be used on a mix and, since its MY birthday, I guess I can violate my own rules... haha. :-) Here is another video moment, again sound quality is terrible, but you get the idea. Wow... its July already and it definitely feels like it outside! Well, as if it wasn't hot enough, here is a new mix that will hopefully make you sweat. :-P Since I've been sharing these on Facebook, many have commented that they favor the harder mixes/parts of my mixes better. Since I will never give up my happy discoey songs, I'll just try to get to the more "peak-hour" music sooner in the mix. In addition, I have been tweaking the ClubChrisFM Sparkle FiltersTM®© somewhat. I think I've been driving the volume with somewhat of a lead foot, so that has been adjusted such that this mix may not sound as "loud" overall, but you should notice better dynamic contrast and clarity. A few songs of interest... First of all, I apologize for the quality of Amber - I Don't Believe In Hate (Yinon Yahel Extended Mix). It Is a pre-release demo, but I just couldn't wait another few weeks for the official release to use it. I mean... hello... it's Amber and Yinon. Suffice to say, stunning. Alan T vs. Ferosh - That Jungle Sound (Tony Moran Mix) is not exactly hot off the press and, in fact I wanted it to be on my Purple Warm-Up Mix. I have never, however, been able to find a full version. That is until yesterday, thanks to above-and-beyond support from Masterbeat.com. It is now included in it's full 10-minute tribal circuit goodness. Finally, Disco Freaks - Take Me 2 The Sun (Freemasons 2009 Remix) is not exactly new either. Mixes of it first made it's rounds back in 2007, but this 2009 refreshed mix by Freemasons has me loving it. I will say, it is probably my official song of the summer. You knew I wouldn't waste any time putting some of my favorite MJ dance remixes in a mix, would you? Now, I threw this together rather quickly, so please forgive all the level, technical, and mixing glitches. I did the best I could in a few hours, but I think you will enjoy it. Yes, some of these mixes are dated, but they seem to all work together. I used all remixes (since we all have the originals), save for one... my favorite MJ song. It shall not be altered. Those that truly know me will immediately recognize the Billie Jean remix... hello... I used to play it all the time and I think it appeared on an old Chris's Eclectic Collection at some point. What's funny is how I really spoke to Can You Feel It on my last mix (Moon). I didn't think I would need to use that song again so soon, but the version delivered here is very true to the original Jacksons song. Working on this mix (and going through all my library of MJ songs) was very bittersweet. At one point I would want to jam and another I would want to cry. I hope this mix brings you a lof of the memories, emotions, and smiles that his music has me all of my life. R.I.P. Michael. After finishing the Sun mix, I was definitely ready to dive into something darker and harder. Don't let the first part of this mix fool you -- it does start off somewhat smoother -- it is still not for the weak. I just had to ease you into it. Ha. I didn't comment on any specific tracks on the last mix (save Viola's song), but I do want to bring a few to your attention on this one. To start, there are a number of new remixes/remakes of oldies but goodies on here. I didn't plan it that way on purpose. If they were good at one point, there must have been a reason. I hope those that remember the originals will enjoy these new takes on them. One song that has really been under the dance radar (although it did appear on Billboard a few weeks) is Valeriya -- Wild (Bimbo Jones Vocal Mix). Yeah. I have worked out to this song a number of times over the last few weeks and it just makes me, well, Wild (hardy har har). It just has so much energy. Another one, including the back-story... DJ Demarko feat. Heather Leigh West - Drop A House (Razor & Guido Remix). Many will remember the song by The Tamperer feat. Maya - Feel It from 1998. What you may not know is Maya didn't sing that song at all. Heather, however, did sing it a few years earlier with Urban Discharge in 1994. She, according to an interview, did not even know this (what I will call) "remix" existed until a friend played it off a dance mix CD. They essentially lied that it was Maya's vocals. There was even a video to their song, with Maya lip synching Heather's (very different than Maya's) voice. Long story short, in order to essentially prove once and for all that it was her vocals, she recently re-recorded the song (which she sounds exactly the same). I intro it with a remake of The Jacksons - Can You Feel It, as The Tamperer song sampled it extensively in their "remix". The Razor & Guido remix actually use a very similar backbeat as well. I've been waiting to put Can You Feel It and Drop a House together for years and have finally got my chance. I will say that The Tamperer "remix" does bring back so many memories of my coming out, so this song does share a special place in my heart (even if it's lyrics are, ironically, very bitter). :-) One last comment regarding Safire - Exotique (Mike Rizzo Funk Generation Club Mix)... I love a lot of Mike's remixes, although they would typically not appear where I use it, at the particular point of this kind of mix (or perhaps in this kind of mix at all). This remix, however, just grabbed me out of nowhere. There is something about the smooth chord progressions and subtle building that just give me chills every time I listen. I've already e-mailed him to see if there may be a long, 12-minute mix I don't know about. If I were at a party, I would love it to be played at the exact point where I placed it. Love it. I will have to say, probably my favorite song on the entire mix. I have been trying really hard to get this mix done before the Memorial holiday weekend, and, thanks today to a little birdie who provided me with a song I've been waiting on, it's here! Being a "Sun" mix, I tried to keep everything on this mix a little more light, happy, and/or uplifting. For those of you who like my more bubbly-discoey mixes, then you'll like this one. While I was working on this mix a few weeks ago, news came that Viola Wills (the last song on this mix) lost her long battle with Leukemia. It's been a few months since I have done a mix and I have finally had time recently to get another one done. If your a fan of my typical, more bubble-gum types of mixes, this one is not for you. I wanted this mix to have a little more of a hard, circuity sound. It pays homage to Tony Moran, but there is also a shout to Deborah Cox (since she made her Texas performance debut at Purple in 2008) and to DJ Escape (who is on FIRE right now and will be spinning in Dallas over the Memorial weekend). Although the Rihanna song is a few years old, her label decided to release new mixes of it recently. I also wanted to include some Britney here, but honestly I'm already kinda over her three most recent singles and then this unofficial mix of Unusual You I've had for a few weeks came to mind. It's funny because I would almost say I like this unofficial mix of Unusual You more than all the official mixes of her last three singles. It just works. And finally, Offer Nissim... such a haunting mix of Abba, similar to his mix of S.O.S. a few years back.
