In today’s Gospel we read Mark’s account of the Magi, who visited Jesus with three gifts. These gifts are thought to symbolize Jesus’ future as our savior.

According to Mark, the Magi learned of Jesus’ birth through a sign in the stars. Reading the stars, the Magi understood Jesus as the newborn king and went to pay homage. With them, they brought three gifts—each foreshadowing a meaningful moment in his life and ministry.

Today’s Gospel follows the joyous celebration of Jesus’ birth and invites us to continue our festivities for the feast of the Holy Family. Throughout Luke’s Gospel, we learn about Jesus, his identity, and the growth of his ministry. In today’s passage, Luke continues to help us understand Jesus. Our readings over the past few weeks have bridged the connection between John the Baptist and Jesus. Each from Luke’s Gospel, we learn that The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus as God only to those who believe.

In today’s reading, we see this very occurrence take place before the birth of both Jesus and John the Baptist. Our Gospel begins when Mary sets out to the town of Judah to visit Elizabeth. At the time of Mary’s travels, both women are with child.

John the Baptist is once again at the center of today’s reading. Last week, we read about John and the teachings that paved the way for Jesus’ ministry.

In the moments leading up to the passage we read from today, Luke writes of John the Baptist telling his followers that repentance is achieved through actions. In our Gospel, John provides his listeners with examples of what these actions might look like.
