  • 137. Deeper Alignment | Alamo Heights Live Talk

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Alamo Heights High School.

Mackey breaks down some misconception about character and integrity. He explains that the pursuit of character, the pursuit of integrity does not mean that there is a lack of ambition.

    Key takeaways from this podcast:

    • Building character is not about a lack of ambition but about a deeper alignment of what matters most
    • Focusing on character doesn't resign you to a participation trophy
    • Ambition and character live in the same world

Our character aligns us with something more than ourselves. When we love our family, we'll do whatever it takes to succeed for their sakes. That deeper alignment between our goals, our family, and our character, moves us farther toward success than mere ambition ever could.

  • 131. The Extra Mile | MSLJ Episode

In our latest episode, we are bringing one out from the Mackey Speaks Leadership Journal archive. This episode is power-packed, so make sure a pencil is at hand!

Mackey talks about the idea of going the extra mile, and when you go the extra mile, your impact will be amplified. When you are willing to go the extra mile, when you are willing to do things that others are not, they realize that you are different. When you are willing to go the extra mile for someone and invest in them, that return on investment will come back and be a far greater commitment than you could have ever imagined.

    Takeaways from this podcast:

    • Invest in the long term, continually.
    • There is no such thing as a viral moment
    • Your standard operating procedure should be to go the extra mile

We often think of leadership as "going viral." We think that if we can just get that one big position, or that one perfect podcast, or write the perfect blog post, then I'll get noticed, and people will want to buy what we're selling.

But the problem with that thinking is that yes, a "viral moment" may get you noticed, but unless you've been putting in that "extra mile" effort, there's nothing under the surface. There's nothing for anybody to follow.

You've got to invest in the long term OVER AND OVER. You build buy in with a lifetime of extra mile effort, not buy a quick, flash-in-the-pan viral moment.

Coach Nelson also goes on to share a little bit of her story from being in administration, teaching, and coaching and what brought her to LCISD.

    Key Takeaways from this podcast:

    • You have the potential to be your players and staffs' biggest advocate.

Coach goes through the various mentors she's had both as a coach and as an Athletic Director and shares values and learnings that she's taken and applied to her program from each of them.

  • 129. Rep the Brand | MSLJ Episode From the Archive

In our latest episode, we are bringing you an archived favorite from the Mackey Speaks Leadership Journal.

Mackey is bringing us a message he heard from Coach Braxton of Howard Payne University while out on the West Texas Tour a few months ago. Coach said something that made Mackey grab his pencil and start writing.

Coach said that whether you excel or whether you fall short and don't reach your goals, other people are going to identify you as a part of a team, and we will represent a team in our actions.

    Key Takeaways from this podcast:

    • You are a part of a greater team, so rep the brand well.
    • In moments of anger, stop and count the eyes.
    • Protecting your brand is not only a defensive posture, but it is an offensive posture as well.

Mackey encourages us to handle our anger, handle situations that may not be going our way well because there are people watching. We must continually remind ourselves to count the eyes. People will not only evaluate you, but they will begin to evaluate the brand that you represent, whether that is your team, your company, your faith, or your family.

If you are not okay with what you're doing being in the light, then don't let it live in the dark because what's in the dark will eventually come to the light.

He also goes on to talk about his one percent better mentality and how the program has developed over time by building it from the ground up, starting in middle school.

    Key Takeaways from this episode:

    • Ask more from your coaches, athletes, and parents
    • Every kid has a starting point and an excellent point, and they're all different. Coach them where they're at.
    • As a coach you have to realize it's never as good as it is and it's never as bad as it is

Coach shares a little bit about the expectations every coach has for their players and how to use those expectations to continually point them in the direction of their personal excellence both on and off the field.
