This week I spoke to new Greenwich Baseball Coach Adrian Arango. Adrian was hired in November, with hopes of having a successful first season leading the Cardinals. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, all Spring sports were cancelled, delaying Adrian's first year at the helm until 2021. Adrian and I discussed how he and his team has handled this difficult time, and what he's looking forward to down the road. It was great to talk some baseball, and Greenwich Baseball is in great hands with Adrian leading the way!
One of my former college coaches and I spoke about all things baseball and life. Coach Raiola has one of the most impressive baseball minds I've been around, and his ability to find new information and relay it to his players in an effortless manner was always something I admired. He also manages the Valley Blue Sox, of the NECBL in the summer. "Johnny", as many know him as, played a huge role in putting Western New England baseball back on the map. He is now the head baseball coach at Elms College, and will no doubt find success and greatly improve that program.
I was lucky enough to talk some infield play with one of the best in the business. Perry Hill, infield coach for the Seattle Mariners, has long been recognized one of the best infield minds in all of baseball. We discussed what makes a good infielder, how he teaches the craft, and how he's become a successful coach. Loved listening to all the knowledge Perry had to provide!
I talked with my former legion coach and NY Mets Scout Mike Abate about his past in both baseball and football, and how his passion for both games blossomed. It was awesome going through Mike's coaching process and how he has become so successful. I now am fortunate enough to coach alongside Mike for Greenwich American Legion. Looking forward to what the 2020 season has in store!
I was lucky enough to chat with Yankees manager Aaron Boone about some of his coaching philosophies, the 2020 Yanks, and of course Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. It was an insightful conversation with one of the best managers in the game today.
