SPEAK LIFE, PART 2: BEFORE YOU SPEAK, LISTEN

What if speaking life into an athlete starts before you ever open your mouth?

In Part 2 of the Speak Life series, Coach Nic Carothers challenges coaches and parents to reconsider one of the most important parts of influence: listening.

As athletes enter seasons filled with expectations, competition, pressure, recruiting, playing-time battles, and uncertainty, what we see on the outside doesn’t always tell us what’s happening on the inside.

Public performance is not reliable evidence of private health.

An athlete can play a great game and still be struggling. She can earn the scholarship and still feel overwhelmed. He can look confident and still be afraid.

So before we correct the behavior, give the speech, offer the solution, or tell them to “toughen up,” maybe we need to ask:

What is this athlete actually trying to tell me?

Using James 1:19, 1 Kings 19, Psalm 34:18, Psalm 42:5, and Philippians 4:6–8, Coach Nic walks through a biblical progression for caring for athletes as people first:

LISTEN → CARE → STAY → NAME → REDIRECT

We look at Elijah’s collapse after one of his greatest public victories, David’s brokenness, Paul’s words about anxiety, and what Scripture teaches us about staying close when someone is hurting.

This isn’t about coaches becoming therapists.

It’s about becoming the kind of trustworthy adult an athlete can approach and say:

“I’m tired.”
“I’m scared.”
“I’m struggling.”
“This hurts.”
“I don’t know what to do.”

And knowing we won’t disappear when the conversation becomes uncomfortable.

Because the athlete is someone before they are something.

Before the points.
Before the scholarship.
Before the starting position.
Before the wins and losses.

People first. Performance second.

Coach, what kind of environment are your words creating?

Parent, when your athlete gets in the car after practice or a game, what does that conversation feel like?

Before you correct what happened…

Before you give the answer…

Before you speak…

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “The tongue can bring death or life…” and Ephesians 4:29 challenges believers to use their words in ways that are good, helpful, and encouraging to the people who hear them.

Those Scriptures have enormous implications for the way we lead young people.

In a generation where student-athletes are navigating pressure, comparison, performance anxiety, lack of confidence, identity struggles, stress, and serious mental-health challenges, we have to recognize that the voice of a coach or parent can become part of the voice an athlete eventually hears inside her own head.

That doesn’t mean we stop coaching hard.

It doesn’t mean we eliminate accountability.

And it certainly doesn’t mean telling athletes only what they want to hear.

It means learning how to tell the truth without destroying the person receiving it.

In this episode, we explore the biblical context surrounding Proverbs 18:21 and Ephesians 4:29 and examine powerful examples throughout Scripture showing what can happen when leaders choose words that either build people or tear them down.

We examine:

• Rehoboam — when harsh leadership helped divide a kingdom.
• Abigail — when wise words interrupted a destructive decision.
• The Twelve Spies — when words shaped the beliefs of an entire community.
• Barnabas — when someone used his voice to help another person move beyond his past.
• Jesus — the model of speaking truth without stripping someone of dignity.

And then we bring those lessons directly into today’s gym, locker room, home, classroom, and athletic program.
