On this episode, Ken joins me to discuss this year’s rules and scoring document. Improvements are store to make your and my lives easier (legitimately!) and we go into the rationale behind it all. Enjoy!
Against all odds, Ken and I are back this week to bring you…well, not actually a lot of fantasy baseball talk. We talk job woes, sleep problems, grad school, pit bull appreciation, and even get into a bit of talk about literature (sort of), but there is fantasy baseball talk sprinkled throughout. Thanks for sticking with us, and hopefully we’ll get you another episode next week…or maybe we won’t. I look forward to finding out along with you all!
There’s an old cliche that’s dusted off the first time a new president does something particularly presidential that ‘this is the day that _________ truly became president’. But the truth is that of course that’s b******t: they’ve been president from the moment they got sworn in. That’s sort of how the gig works.
But even thought Ken and I have been ‘podcasting’—in the broadest sense of the word—for weeks, I’m tempted to say that this is the week that Kenny and I truly became podcasters. I don’t know what it was. Maybe it was the fact that the heat was so stifling in my office that the ‘don’t sound like a d*****s’ portion of my brain was not functioning, allowing me to achieve that perfect podcaster mindset of ‘just because you don’t know what you’re talking about doesn’t mean you shouldn’t just keep talking’. Maybe it was that not finding a guest meant we were forced to fall back on what comes most naturally to us: just b**********g about what’s going on in our fantasy baseball leagues. Or maybe it’s that we found out what sports talk radio has known for decades now: sometimes it’s just fun to argue about stuff with your friends. No matter what it was, I think that this was the week that Ken and I truly became podcasters.
We changed things up this week due to taking a week off to deal with some sad s**t (I will not be taking questions on what that means), but we fell into what we know best: just talking. I debuted both a ‘Coaches Corner’ and also a ‘Commissioner’s Corner’ segments; don’t get attached to them, I was (obviously) winging it. But stick around and towards the end of the episode you’re going to get the purist distillation of my and Ken’s relationship: I spitball a fantasy sports idea, he tells me (in the nicest terms) that I’m being an idiot, and we work through it in real time. It’s the sort of behinds the scenes commissioner-ing business you don’t often see, let alone have committed to the historical record. (And don’t worry: if you don’t like what I was proposing it was more of a ‘brainstorming’ than ‘this is what I actually feel like must happen’; I’ve already talked myself into two or three other ideas since we recorded.)
So sidle up and hang out with us for a bit. I can’t promise not to disappoint you, but I can promise to help you kill about 40 minutes of time.
One of these days I’ll have the energy to write a proper introduction for one of these episodes, but that day is not today. David (The Lino The Shields | Mid-Atlantic League) was kind enough to swing by the pod for the second time in three weeks (though the first where everyone’s equipment was functioning) to join us for a longer than normal episode, but I think you’ll find that it’s still a really good hang. We hope you’ll check it out!

This week Ken and I get into a bit of business before getting to the (frankly, more interesting) main event: the league’s most famous luddite, Mark Papier (aka ‘Old Man Pap’) joins us to talk about choosing fantasy sports over horse races, shares a few stories from Coastal Elite league lore, and, most importantly, talks in depth about his late son Dillon Papier and the influence he’s had on the league—both this one and MLB. It’s a good chat—if marred slightly by some audio issues on my part—so if you have the time I hope you check it out.
This week Ken and I venture into uncharted territory: we have our very first guest! Our distinguished grand champion DAN (All Valley Sweep the Leg) joins us this week to discuss pitching injuries, the weirdness of week ones, why putting both our Mets fans in the same league would just be too depressing, the true origins of the ‘Cheech’ nickname, and much more. Give it a listen in the way it was intended: in the background as you’re doing something more important.
Until next time…
This week Ken and I are flying solo as we introduce you to this show, ourselves, and what you can (sort of) expect from us this season. Oh yeah, we also ‘drafted’ everyone in the league onto ‘Team Mack’ and ‘Team Ken’.
We hope you enjoy! If you have suggestions on ways we can make this more useful (and, let’s be honest, more interesting) please let us know!
Until next time…
Welcome to the new official podcast of Coastal Elite Fantasy Baseball. Trying to give you a bit more bang for your buck has always been my goal, and taking an adventure into audio is the natural progression in the ‘finding things that take way more time to put together than they do to consume’ skill tree.
My goals is to put something small together for you each week with the help of ‘No Show’ Kenny (who isn’t here this week, naturally) that gives you more insight into the league and into each other. There’s twenty of us and twenty weeks in the regular season, so I hope to get everyone on at least once this year to show there’s more to everyone than just a punny team name on league website.
This week, though, I am flying solo and bringing you some big news: We’re taking our talents to Fantrax! I know this sounds scary (change is hard) but I promise you it’s not going to be nearly as bad as you think it is.
I go into the full details on the pod—and I’m probably going to summarize them for CARLIN in the email I send out—so there’s no point in going into it all here, but give it a listen to see what’s in store for us with the move.
I know that this isn’t the best quality but I assure you: it will get better. I appreciate your patience as I get the feel for all of this and if you have any suggestions of things you’d like to see or things that can be improved, I’m all ears.
Take care everyone and I’ll be talking to you soon.
