For this coffee break we talk about surrounding yourself with people that will make you a better person to who and what you want to be. In order to get to where you want to be, do what you want to do, not only do you have to come to the conclusion that you must do the work, you also need to cultivate your external surroundings. You need to surround yourself with those in the know, those that know more than you. If you play sports you play people better that you to get better. In life you need to surround yourself with those that you feel will make you better at what you want to do

Aristotle said, "the law is reason, free from passion." This basically means that the law is meant to be followed in order to uphold certain standards set by government and society, and there should be no room for personal feelings or obsessions that are based on those feelings.

In other words, you cannot allow personal prejudices or subjective interpretations to interfere with the dispensation of the law.

Or is it?

In the course of this countries’ 245 years of existence, one of the youngest countries in the world by the way-

Since 1789 we have had somewhat over 11,00 amendments proposed at amending our Constitution and actually amended it 27 times. There is a clause in the Constitution that provides instruction on how to propose and amend an amendment. Does the fact that we have changed laws mean that the law is not based on reason because reason does not change? It does not become outdated, but is it based on the “winds of societal fever”?

When you tell your students that you have clothes in your closet older than them, that is saying something.

Weekends used to be spent on the road, hitting bars, and clubs, parties, and places. Now all I want to do is plant, rake, trim, and relax in the backyard with a glass of wine and music in the background. Adulthood is like an oncoming car that you just don't see.

When I was in college, waaaaayyy back in the day, Thursday night was the night we went out, that was bar and club night. I never know why Thursdays were the day, I mean we did the same thing Friday, Saturday, Sun….well you get the point. As it continued way into my 20’s and ahem 30’s but alas those days are far gone, and I find myself on the recliner having the 8 pm football game watching me!

What is your go-out-out night? or What night was college night when you went to college?

I have been reading Mediations by Emp Marcus Aurelius, and relearning the teachings of Stoicism and I always come across a quote or a thought by the great stoics that really resonate with me, especially on whatever I may be doing or going through at that time. Yesterday I came across this one by Seneca:

“If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable.”

This is so true, if we have set no goals, or no focus or direction in life, any wind that blows is going to get us nowhere, because we how will we know we got there if we did not know where we were going?

Sometimes we are called to do something and we don't know where it will lead us, this is true. However, I think in life we need some sort of direction, of a goal, a final destination.

Merriam-Webster defines manliness as the quality or state of being manly (as by having qualities such as strength or virility that are traditionally associated with a man)

The English word “virtue” comes from the Latin word virtus, which meant manliness or masculine strength. The Romans believed that to be manly, a man had to cultivate virtues like courage, temperance, and industry.

Is there an image of what manliness is supposed to be?

Has it changed over the years?
