In 1993, Marc Andreessen and his team faced a daunting challenge while developing Mosaic, the pioneering web browser. As they strove to make the World Wide Web accessible to everyone, they encountered a major hurdle: the University of Illinois, their institution, threatened to restrict Mosaic's licensing and limit its potential. Andreessen recalled the frustration, "We were told we couldn't commercialize Mosaic, that it had to remain academic." Undeterred, Andreessen and his co-founder, Eric Bina, took a bold step, leaving the university to form Netscape Communications. This pivotal move paved the way for Netscape's IPO in 1995, which raised a staggering $3 billion, solidifying Andreessen's status as a visionary entrepreneur and cementing the web's place in modern society.
