A British judge ruled against a man who wants to excavate a landfill where he says a hard drive with access to thousands of bitcoins was mistakenly dumped over 11 years ago.

Since 2013, James Howells has been hoping to recover a laptop hard drive that he says contains the private key for cryptocurrency which he says he mined in 2009. Ars wrote about it at the time, noting that the value of a bitcoin had just passed $1,000, making 7,500 bitcoins worth $7.5 million.

The alleged number of bitcoins has changed a bit, with Howells now saying he lost 8,000 bitcoins. The bitcoin price exceeded $100,000 last month and was $95,636 as of last Friday, or $765 million for 8,000 bitcoins.

Nvidia is officially announcing its RTX 50-series GPUs today. After months of leaks and rumors, the next-generation RTX Blackwell GPUs are now official, and there are four of them on the way.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed the RTX 50-series GPUs during a CES keynote this evening, announcing a $1,999 RTX 5090, a $999 RTX 5080, a $749 RTX 5070 Ti, and a $549 RTX 5070. Nvidia’s new RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs will both be available on January 30th, with the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 to follow in February.

Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab on Tuesday said it strongly disputes allegations that it uses conflict minerals in its products and told suppliers earlier this year to stop purchasing those minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

In a statement to Reuters, Apple said it told its suppliers their smelters and refiners must stop buying tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold from the two countries as conflict in the region has escalated.

Apple's statement came in response to a criminal complaint filed earlier in the day against the company in France and Belgium, where the Congolese government alleged Apple uses conflict minerals laundered through international supply chains.

One of the biggest talking points in the aftermath of The Game Awards was the reveal of The Witcher 4. Given The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (itself a former Game of the Year winner) is still lauded as one of the finest RPGs ever made and CD Projekt Red seems to be out of the Cyberpunk woods, it’s no surprise that it’s the talk of the town. Unfortunately, it’s also no surprise it has generated a small corner of outrage.

Naughty Dog has disabled the comments on its official upload of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’s debut trailer, as the discourse has soured in the aftermath of the title’s announcement. PlayStation has kept the comments up on its mirror, much to the surprise of some fans.

Nuclear power may have received the lion’s share of attention from energy hungry tech companies over the past few months, with Google among them. But it appears that those new reactors won’t be enough for their AI ambitions: Google is now working with partners to build gigawatts of renewable power, battery storage, and grid upgrades to power its data centers.

Google announced Tuesday it signed a deal with renewable developer Intersect Power and investment fund TPG Rise Climate to spin up enough carbon-free power to drive several gigawatt-scale data centers. Altogether, the investment in renewable power will run about $20 billion, and Intersect is already financing the first project, the company told TechCrunch.

Luigi Mangione, who was valedictorian of his private high school in the Baltimore area, appears to have been an avid gamer, with dozens of game titles listed on an Xbox Live account that shares his name. In 2018, Mangione described himself as passionate about making video games, and helped to found a game development club at Penn that was quickly joined by roughly 60 students, according to a since-deleted article on the university's news hub.

On a GitHub page believed to belong to Mangione, he shared code repositories that focused on machine learning and human-computer interaction. Among these is a project titled "Meccanoid-Imitate,” which apparently uses Arduino—an open source and easy-to-use electronics platform—and a programmable Meccanoid robot. The repository, last updated four years ago, includes animated GIFs showing Mangione in what appears to be a classroom, moving his arms while a Meccanoid robot behind him mimics his gestures.

Drake has initiated legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify over allegations that the two companies conspired to artificially inflate the popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

In a filing Monday (Nov. 25) in Manhattan court, Drake’s Frozen Moments LLC accuses UMG of launching an illegal “scheme” involving bots, payola, and other methods to pump up Lamar’s song.

Drake & Kendrick Lamar’s Rocky Relationship Explained

“UMG did not rely on chance, or even ordinary business practices,” attorneys for Drake’s company write. “It instead launched a campaign to manipulate and saturate the streaming services and airwaves.”

Drake’s attorneys accuse UMG of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, the federal “RICO” statute often used in criminal cases against organized crime. They also allege deceptive business practices and false advertising under New York state law.
