Once an obscure legal doctrine, qualified immunity is now in the spotlight — and in the crosshairs of many activists and advocates nationwide. For decades, the doctrine has shielded police officers and other government employees from being held responsible for all sorts of malfeasance. Qualified immunity makes it nearly impossible for individuals to sue public officials by requiring proof that they violated “clearly established law.”

In a rare show of solidarity with protesters in cities like Minneapolis, New York, and Portland, courts and state legislatures began to take notice, too — in June, Colorado lawmakers passed a bill that gutted the doctrine’s power in state courts. Multiple lower federal court decisions have also acknowledged how qualified immunity functions more as absolute immunity, and shields police officers from accountability, with even a conservative Supreme Court justice calling the doctrine into question.

Violence should never play a part when campaign canvassers are out doing their job, but Florida Democrats say a Republican canvasser — with a violent arrest in his past — should not have had that job.

The political press has been awash with stories since Christopher Monzon was attacked while canvassing for U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio in Hialeah Sunday night. The Senator went viral with a tweet showing pictures of Monzon battered and bloodied in a campaign T-shirt. Rubio said that the attack was politically motivated.

Now, though, Democrats have questions for Rubio about why Monzon was hired to canvas for the GOP in the first place. Monzon pleaded no contest in 2017 to assault with a deadly weapon and inciting to riot as protesters asked for Confederate street names in Hollywood to be removed and was photographed at the fatal 2017 Charlottesville protest reciting an antisemitic sentiment. 

At a virtual press conference Friday, Democrats called for Republicans to fire Monzon from the job for which he earned $10,000 between June and August, which the Huffington Post first reported.

“Marco Rubio, Senator, please fire Christopher Monzon,” said Rabbi Mark Winer, president of the Florida Democratic Party Jewish Caucus. “Our society can’t afford to play footsie with racist, antisemites, White supremacists. We can’t give them any room to work their poison, to inject it into the system.”

Rachelle Litt, Vice President of the Florida Democratic Party Jewish Caucus, said that it’s disturbing that Republicans have hired someone with a past as well-known as Monzon’s.

“Rubio and the Republican Party are fostering the spread of antisemitism and hate by allowing and including right-wing extremists and supremacists in their political sphere and activities,” Litt said, noting that Thursday was the fourth anniversary when a gunman burst into a Pittsburgh synagogue and killed 11 Jews.

Rubio, however, scolded reporters Friday for asking him about it and sidestepped questions about Monzon’s history, except to say he doesn’t know about it.

“We should be focused on these two thugs who attacked him in a felonious attack and that’s what you should be asking me about,” Rubio said, in a tweet that showed him responding to reporters’ questions Friday. “That’s what the press should be focused on and not shaming the victim of a crime.”

It has also given parents more flexibility. Of course, just as many didn't like it for various reasons, usually social or the importance of face-to-face communication in their job.

Leaders of companies, on the other hand, feared it would be a productivity drain or, worse, lead to an inability to determine productivity. Last year "over employment" became a "trend," with articles from The Wall Street Journal and Forbes reporting on the sensation of people who used lockdown restrictions to work two full-time jobs without letting either employer know. While some workers would view this as a finger to Western capitalism, bosses don't take too kindly to the chicanery involved in pulling this off.

This is exactly the situation Davis Bell, CEO of cloud-based accounting practice management software company Canopy, seems to describe in his post on the social network for suits.

Washington Wizards forward Deni Avdija is believed to be the NBA’s lone Jewish player and on Friday night he broke his silence on the Kyrie Irving saga.

Irving was suspended for at least five games and reportedly must meet a number of prerequisites to return to the floor as he initially failed to adequately apologize for sharing a movie on his social media account that promotes antisemitic disinformation.

Brooklyn suspended Irving before their game against the Wizards. Avdija, who is from Israel, spoke out about the situation.

"[Irving] is a role model, he’s a great player. I think he [made] a mistake. But you need to understand that he gives [an] example to people. People look up to him," he said, via the New York Post.

"You can think whatever you want, you can do whatever you want. I don’t think it’s right to go out in public and publish it, and let little kids that follow you see it, and the generation to come after to think like that. Because it’s not true. And I don’t think it’s fair. Hopefully, he’s sorry for what he said.

"I think there needs to be consequences for the actions that a player [does]. I don’t know the punishment that the league gives, but I think that needs to be known that there’s no room for words like that."

At least, that’s what I was often told by my classmates and, more subtly, by my family.

As soon as I entered middle school, I became obsessed with shoujo manga and anime — the type of Japanese visual media made for teen girls. Magical girls, romance stories, and cute colorful characters were my kryptonite. Every week I was in Borders (I know) spending my allowance on every volume of Tokyo Mew Mew (which was for me what Sailor Moon was for everyone else).

Yet when talking to friends at school, I hid the extent of my hobby, covering up my more girlish interests with a passing familiarity of more male-oriented titles, like Naruto. When making friends with other anime fans online, I was careful to hide my race behind cute pale-skinned avatars. Even at such a young age, I had internalized enough of society’s messaging to know what to expect if I were honest about my interests.
