Born and raised in the mountains of central Idaho, Cody Braun is one of the driving forces behind the GRAMMY Award-winning Americana and Red Dirt powerhouse Reckless Kelly. Alongside his younger brother, Willy Braun, Cody helped form the band in 1996 before relocating to Austin, Texas, where Reckless Kelly would become one of the most influential independent bands in Americana, Texas Country, and Red Dirt music.
Long before Reckless Kelly, Cody was immersed in music as a member of Muzzie Braun & the Boys, performing with his father, legendary Idaho musician Muzzie Braun. Growing up touring throughout the West instilled a deep appreciation for authentic songwriting, exceptional musicianship, and the independent spirit that continues to define Reckless Kelly today.
A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Cody's signature fiddle playing has become one of the band's defining sounds. In addition to fiddle, he contributes mandolin, harmonica, guitar, and harmony vocals, helping create the unmistakable blend of country, rock, folk, and Americana that has earned Reckless Kelly a fiercely loyal fanbase for nearly three decades.
Reckless Kelly's career has been built almost entirely on their own terms. Rather than chasing the Nashville mainstream, the band forged an independent path that has resulted in 17 studio albums, countless sold-out shows, and a reputation as one of the finest live bands in American roots music. Their accolades include:
GRAMMY Award winners
2024 Ameripolitan Outlaw Group of the Year
2025 Texas Music Chart Awards – Entertainer of the Year
Multiple Texas radio No. 1 singles, including "Keep Lookin' Down the Road" and "What's Left of My Heart" from their acclaimed 2024 album The Last Frontier.
Beyond the stage, Cody remains deeply connected to his Idaho roots through the legendary Braun Brothers Reunion, the annual music festival in Challis, Idaho, that has become one of the most respected Americana and Red Dirt festivals in the country. Now celebrating more than four decades, the event brings world-class musicians back to the Braun family's hometown while raising significant funds for the local community.
In 2025, Reckless Kelly announced they would step back from full-time touring after nearly 30 years on the road. While the relentless touring schedule is slowing, Cody and the band continue writing, recording new music, and performing select special events, ensuring the Reckless Kelly legacy will continue for years to come.
