Ben Garcia is an Americana and country singer-songwriter whose music sounds like it was built on the backroads of the American West—and in many ways, it was.

Born along Utah's Wasatch Front and raised near Boulder, Colorado, Garcia began performing in the alternative-rock scene while still young. His musical path eventually took a major detour when he became deeply involved in training and competing with upland bird dogs, building a reputation in the field-trial community. Years spent traveling Western highways with dogs, horses and a Gibson guitar provided the experiences that would eventually shape his distinctive style of songwriting. 

Those miles show up in Garcia's music. His songs combine Americana, country and roots music with an earthy vocal style and storytelling centered around real people, relationships, honky-tonks and life in the West. After stepping away from performing for a period, Garcia returned to music with a renewed commitment to songwriting and touring. 

Garcia has become a sought-after opening act, sharing stages with artists including Uncle Lucius, The Wilder Blue, Aaron Watson, Chris Knight, Jason Eady, Kelly Willis, Ned LeDoux, Ward Davis, John R. Miller and Ty Myers, among many others. His recent music includes songs such as “Alright Tonight,” “Sweet and True,” and “Road Song.” 

What makes Ben particularly well suited for Musical Miles Podcast is that his story really is about the miles. His songwriting wasn't created solely in Nashville writing rooms—it was developed through years of driving across America, working with animals, meeting people and collecting the experiences that eventually became songs.

In our conversation with Ben Garcia, we talk about the road from rock & roll to bird dogs to Americana, the experiences behind his songs, and what it's like returning to music with a lifetime of stories finally ready to be told.

Alyssa Joy Claffey is an Idaho-grown violinist and fiddler who describes her musical style as “grassical”—classical training with plenty of twang. She picked up the violin at just five years old, studied classically, and earned a spot with the Boise Philharmonic at age 19. After spending more than a decade as a music educator in Sun Valley, Idaho, Alyssa made the leap into performing full-time.

Her versatility has allowed her to move comfortably from symphony halls to honky-tonks, festivals and intimate songwriter settings. As an artist-at-large, Alyssa has performed across the country and beyond, while becoming a familiar presence in Idaho's vibrant live-music community. Her résumé includes work with High Mtn Heard, appearances on recordings by other artists, and performances at events including the 2026 Sawtooth Valley Gathering.

Alyssa's musical journey also includes a remarkable personal comeback. Complications following breast-cancer treatment left her left arm paralyzed, threatening her ability to play the instrument that had been part of her life since childhood. After returning to the Robie Creek area where she was raised, she recovered use of her arm and was back performing and teaching. Her current artist biography describes her as having been declared a “clinical miracle” in March 2022. 

Today, Alyssa brings together the precision of a classically trained violinist with the freedom, energy and improvisation of a roots-music fiddler. Whether she's playing Americana, country, bluegrass, rock or stepping into something completely unexpected, her ability to cross musical boundaries makes her a distinctive voice in the Idaho music scene.

David Starr is a singer-songwriter, musician, guitar shop owner, producer, and festival organizer who has turned his lifelong love of music into something much bigger than a career—it has become a way of strengthening the music community around him.

An Arkansas native now based in Cedaredge, Colorado, Starr has spent decades writing, recording and performing his distinctive blend of Americana, folk and blues. He has released more than 11 albums, toured internationally, and shared stages or collaborated with artists including John Oates, John McEuen, Steve Cropper and Jim Lauderdale, while opening shows for artists such as America, Jim Messina, Karla Bonoff and Travis Tritt. 

But Starr's impact reaches well beyond the stage. He founded Starr's Guitars in Little Rock before relocating the business to Cedaredge in 2001. The shop has become a Main Street fixture, offering vintage, new and used guitars while serving as a gathering place for musicians and music lovers. 

David and his wife Cindy Starr have also played an important role in building Cedaredge's arts community. David is a founding board member of the Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center, where he continues to organize and promote concerts. In 2025, David and Cindy received Colorado's Governor's Creative Leadership Award, recognizing their contributions to arts and cultural development in the state. GMAEC
That commitment to songwriters is especially evident in the Grand Mesa Songwriter Festival, which David produces in Cedaredge. The festival brings established and emerging writers together for intimate songwriter rounds where audiences hear not only the songs, but the stories and inspiration behind them.

Eric Ramsey is an award-winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller whose music moves comfortably between blues, folk, Americana, and roots music. Based in the Phoenix area, Ramsey has built a reputation for expressive songwriting, soaring vocals, intricate fingerpicking, and powerful bottleneck slide guitar. His songs often explore the human condition with a mix of honesty, humor, sensitivity, and hard-earned perspective.
 
Ramsey earned national recognition in 2022 when he won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in the Solo/Duo category. He also received the Memphis Cigar Box Guitar Award for outstanding guitarist in that category. His other honors include three wins at the Phoenix Blues Society's Blues Showdown, the Stefan George Memorial Songwriting Contest, the People's Choice Award at the Wildflower Arts & Music Festival, and two finalist appearances at the Telluride Blues Challenge. 

A member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame, Eric is equally at home on the songwriter and folk festival circuits. He has been a featured performer multiple times at the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival and has appeared at festivals around the country. His live performances showcase more than traditional acoustic guitar—his instrumental palette includes resonator/slide guitar, Weissenborn-style lap steel, and banjo.

For more than three decades, Jeff Fasano has built a remarkable career photographing the artists, songwriters and musicians who create the music we love. His portraits go beyond simply documenting a face—they seek to capture the personality, emotion and story of the person standing in front of his camera.

We caught up with Jeff at the Grand Mesa Songwriter Festival in Cedaredge, Colorado, where he was surrounded by exactly the kind of people who have inspired much of his work: singers, songwriters and storytellers. Jeff shared his perspective on photography, connecting with artists, and the importance of creating an environment where his subjects can relax enough to reveal something genuine.

Jeff's work is especially connected to the Americana music community. That relationship is beautifully documented in his book, Americana Portrait Sessions, a collection of intimate portraits celebrating the musicians and songwriters who have helped define the genre.

Throughout his career, Jeff has photographed an extraordinary range of performers—from established legends to independent artists still carving out their place in the business. But regardless of someone's level of fame, his approach remains centered on connection rather than celebrity. His goal is not simply to take a great photograph, but to capture something authentic about the person behind the music.

Our conversation with Jeff at Grand Mesa was a fascinating look at the man who is normally behind the camera. This time, we turned the spotlight on him to hear the stories behind the portraits, his journey as a photographer and why the relationship between photographer and artist can make all the difference.

It's another example of what Musical Miles Podcast is all about—discovering the people, stories and relationships that surround the music, both onstage and behind the scenes.

Marcedes Carroll and Doc Elliot bring together two well-traveled musical lives rooted in Americana, country, folk and the storytelling tradition.

Raised in Montana, Marcedes Carroll began playing guitar as a teenager and was writing songs and performing by age 19 in both Moscow, Idaho, and her hometown of Belgrade, Montana. After performing with the classic-rock band Drink Me Pretty, she turned her attention toward her own songwriting and recording career. Her debut project, She’s Pretty, arrived in 2019, followed by extensive touring—including a 2021 journey that took her from the high desert through the South, the Florida Keys and the Carolinas.

Carroll's music draws heavily from the classic country and singer-songwriter sounds of the 1960s and '70s, with influences including Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson and Glen Campbell. In September 2024, she released her first full-length album, We Lost Track of the Stars, recorded at Bandcamp Recording Studio in Bozeman with Montana musicians and Austin producer Scott Davis.

Joining Marcedes is singer-songwriter and performer Doc Elliot, whose résumé includes working as a tour manager and bandmate with Jaime Wyatt and the late Kinky Friedman. Elliot released the album The Rowdy Kind in 2019, which includes his recording of “Willin’” featuring Kinky Friedman.

Today, Marcedes Carroll & Doc Elliot perform as a duo as well as with a full band, splitting their time between Southwest Montana and Southern California. Their collaboration combines Carroll's soulful, Western-rooted songwriting with Elliot's road-tested musicianship and experience, creating a sound that feels equally at home in a Montana listening room, a songwriter festival or an old-school honky-tonk. Carroll is also working on new material for her next full-length record.

For their Musical Miles Podcast episode, there's a particularly interesting story to explore: two artists whose paths through the music business were very different, but who have come together around songs, stories, travel and the tradition of live performance.

Michael Lillie is a singer, songwriter, musician, and longtime veteran of the guitar industry whose life has revolved around instruments, songs, and the people who make them.

Beyond his work as a performing songwriter, Michael spent part of his professional career working with Taylor Guitars, giving him a behind-the-scenes perspective on one of the most influential acoustic-guitar companies in the world. His career also included work with Elixir Strings, the guitar-string brand developed by W. L. Gore & Associates. Those experiences gave Michael a unique understanding of the relationship between the musician, the instrument, and the seemingly small details that can dramatically affect a player's sound.

But Michael's story goes well beyond the business side of music. He is a performer and storyteller in his own right, bringing years of experience and a genuine love of songwriting to the stage.

Steven McClintock — Singer, Songwriter, Producer & Publisher

Steven McClintock is a veteran Texas-born singer, songwriter, producer and music publisher whose career spans more than five decades. Raised in Beaumont, Texas, McClintock developed his love for music at an early age—he was already imitating Elvis Presley and singing “Jailhouse Rock” at just four years old. That childhood fascination eventually grew into a remarkably diverse career encompassing songwriting, performing, record production, publishing, film music and television.

McClintock has accumulated 250+ songwriting credits, with his work crossing country, pop, rock and adult contemporary music. His songs have been associated with artists including Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr., Juice Newton, Aaron Tippin, Andy Williams, Michael Peterson, The Nelsons and Tiffany, among many others. His catalog has generated millions of record sales and streams worldwide.

One of the biggest chapters of his career came through his work with Tiffany. McClintock co-wrote 15 songs for the pop star, including the Billboard Top 10 hit “All This Time,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. His work on the song also earned BMI recognition.

His résumé reaches well beyond conventional songwriting. McClintock has written and recorded music for film and television, including work connected to 19 film scores. He contributed extensively to Jetsons: The Movie, with eight co-writes and lead vocals on three songs, including “Maybe Love.” He also created more than 200 television and radio commercials during his years as a professional staff writer.

As a vocalist, Steven has sung backing vocals with artists including Phil Collins, B.J. Thomas, Tiffany and The Nelsons. He also performed with songwriter Victoria Shaw as an opening act at Garth Brooks' legendary Central Park concert, an event that drew an enormous New York City audience.

Behind the scenes, McClintock co-founded McJames Music Inc. and 37 Records with longtime collaborator Tim James, extending his influence into publishing, artist development and production.

Musical Miles Podcast caught up with Steven at the 2026 Grand Mesa Songwriter Festival in Cedaredge, Colorado, where we had the opportunity to sit down with a songwriter whose career provides a fascinating look at more than 50 years inside the music business. He was part of an impressive 2026 festival lineup capped by headliner Rodney Crowell.

Bill Edwards is an award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music lives comfortably at the intersection of Americana, country, folk, acoustic rock and bluegrass. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Edwards has built a career around thoughtful songwriting, strong musicianship and songs that can be heartfelt, humorous or somewhere in between. His musical journey stretches back to the singer-songwriter scene in Buffalo, New York, in the 1970s, eventually taking him through bluegrass, country-rock and classic country before developing the roots-oriented Americana sound he performs today.

Songwriting has remained the constant throughout that journey. Edwards writes his own material and is an accomplished guitarist, fiddler, mandolin and dobro player, as well as a producer and recording engineer. His 2021 project Whole Cloth was an especially personal undertaking: Edwards wrote the songs, performed most of the instrumentation, and produced, recorded and mixed the project himself in his home studio.

His songwriting credentials go back decades. Edwards was identified as the 1989 winner of the Billboard Country Songwriting Contest, and his songs have been recorded by artists including Lee Roy Parnell and T. Graham Brown. His recorded catalog includes Whole Cloth, 61356, Thirteen Stories, So Far, and the 2025 album A Home in My Heart.

Musical Miles Podcast caught up with Bill at the Grand Mesa Songwriter Festival in Cedaredge, Colorado, where he was part of the festival's 2026 songwriter lineup. It's a fitting setting for an artist whose career has always centered on the craft of the song—the stories behind the lyrics, the experiences that inspire them, and the connection that happens when a songwriter sits down with a guitar and shares those stories with an audience.

Natalie Del Carmen is a Los Angeles-raised singer-songwriter carving out a distinctive place in modern Americana, country and folk music. Her songs pair deeply personal, conversational storytelling with an acoustic, roots-driven sound that often feels far removed from the pavement and pop-radio landscape of Southern California where she grew up.

Natalie's musical journey took a major step forward in 2019 when, at just 18, she moved across the country to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. She graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor's degree in Music, majoring in Songwriting. Her Berklee record also lists her as a three-year graduate, summa cum laude, and a Dean's List student from 2019–2022.

Berklee also proved important beyond the classroom. It was there that Natalie connected with the musicians behind Brunjo, who became some of her earliest collaborators. That relationship began around 2020 and has continued through multiple singles and both of her full-length albums.

Her debut full-length album, Bloodline, arrived in 2023 and introduced listeners to a songwriter with a strong appreciation for melody, storytelling and American roots music. Her influences include artists such as Brandi Carlile, Gregory Alan Isakov and Izaak Opatz, while Natalie's own music increasingly blends traditional country and Americana sensibilities with the perspective of a young songwriter navigating modern life.

In January 2026, Natalie released her sophomore album, Pastures, a nine-song project that represents an even more focused step into Americana and roots music. The record features acoustic instrumentation including fiddle, mandolin, organ, acoustic guitar—and even a 1930s banjo inherited from her grandfather. The songs explore friendships, relationships, expectations, adulthood and the pressure of trying to determine where life is supposed to lead.

Natalie describes her approach as music rooted in storytelling, and that comes through in songs such as “Plans Upon Plans,” “Leanne,” “Los Angeles,” “El Cortez” and “Pressure in the Pastures.” She has also performed at notable songwriter venues including Nashville's Bluebird Café, The Basement and 3rd & Lindsley, while continuing to perform within the Los Angeles singer-songwriter community.

What makes Natalie Del Carmen particularly compelling is the contrast at the heart of her music: a young Los Angeles songwriter creating timeless-sounding American roots music while telling stories very much grounded in her own generation. She respects the traditions of country, folk and Americana without simply trying to recreate the past.
