Hey constant lister! Kevin and John are out of their quarantine bunker. Sadly, with a somewhat somber episode. With the shocking news of Edward Lodewijk Van Halen’s passing, we look back on the opening tracks to Van Halen’s self-titled debut. The 1978 album introduced the world to the band and their ground-breaking and generation-defining guitarist. We feel we only scratched the surface with Van Halen, so another episode may be warranted down the road. Til then...RIP EVH!

This is a podcast episode by Coffee and Consoles. The name of this podcast episode is Tighten Up.
If such poetic marketing worked for The Black Keys, maybe it will for us too?
Eh...probably not!
Almost exactly 10 years ago, the rock duo from Akron, OH found commercial success with their sixth album, Brothers. This week Kevin and John look at the first single, Tighten Up. Produced by Danger Mouse, the track went on to earn the group a Grammy for Best Rock Performance. Please note this episode was recorded over a month ago, but kept being pushed back. Thanks for understanding!

Another sad loss in the musical world occurred with the passing of Little Richard. We reflect on one of the most important and influential figures in Rock n Roll history by looking at two of his most iconic hits, “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally.” At the end of the episode John shares a story about the time he actually met Richard Penniman, and got paid for it too!

John Prine, one of America’s most revered songwriters, passed away this past April at the age of 73. Often heralded as a hero of a “New Nashville,” Prine leaves behind many great songs and memorable stories. We try our best in this second tribute-like episode to pay homage to another fallen musical comrade as we look at his somber tale of “Sam Stone.”

If you are 5’7” and have the nerve to call yourself The Tallest Man On Earth, you are most likely Kristian Matsson. This episode we discuss the Swedish songwriter’s track “We Do My Bluebird Fly,” from his 2008 album Shallow Grave. Beware of open tunings! And what’s up with the missing ‘s’?

After a sad week in the world of music, we decided to do an impromptu tribute episode of sorts. We discuss the legacy of the late Bill Withers and how his music has stood the test of time. We spend some time on one of his earliest and most famous songs, “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Please note, we mention John Prine, but this was recorded before the sad news of his passing.

We hit the sack, it’s been too long, we’re glad to be back. So what does one need for that authentic AC/DC sound? Marshalls, Gibsons, and the Young brothers. We got two out of three, which ain’t too shabby. It’s already been 40 years since this landmark album arrived, so it seems as good of time as any to dive into the classic title track. New singer? No problem. New sound? Nah, get outta here with that nonsense mate!

For the weeks without a full episode, we are starting these short “work tapes” to tide you over. Hear John try to remember a song on the spot, with Kevin correcting him. One of us is an AC/DC connoisseur. Can you tell which one?

Begin the day with a friendly voice. A companion, unobtrusive. Play this podcast that’s so elusive, and the magic music will make your morning mood! Kevin and John talk about this classic track from Rush, from their 1980 album Permanent Waves. There’s some coffee talk, gear talk, time-based effects talk, and listener feedback. More like emotional feedback...on a timeless wavelength. RIP Neil Peart.
