In Episode 72, the SLPs discuss...speech-maxxing! In other words: their conversation with Bri Miluk, Ph.D. CCC-SLP from Episode 71. They revisit many gems from their conversation with Bri, including the importance of critically assessing the logic behind all the intervention approaches we see on social media. Also, be wary of anything that looks too flashy, because the best speech therapy is usually “simple (but not easy).”

This conversation with Bri Miluk is absolutely incredible! Bri, Jouli, Kyla, and Brittany take a close look into common feeding myths from the lens of misinformation in our field. This conversation is not just for the feeding SLPs out there, but any clinician who wants to know more about what misinformation looks and sounds like in our media.
Bri Miluk, PhD, CCC-SLP, CLC is a speech language pathologist and certified lactation consultant with a clinical focus in pediatric feeding disorders, specifically infants and medically complex patients. Bri also has her PhD with a research focus on misinformation in pediatric feeding on social media. When she isn’t working, she enjoys playing mahjong, reading, and spending time outside with her family and friends.

Matt Phillips is a person who stutters, speech therapist at the Sisskin Stuttering Center, and PhD student at Michigan State University. His personal experiences as a person who stutters have influenced his clinical practice and research interests, which are centered around improving the lives of people who stutter through stutter-affirming practices. As a speech therapist at the Sisskin Stuttering Center, he provides telehealth speech therapy to children, teenagers, and adults who stutter using an Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering (ARTS®) framework to help his clients reduce the struggle associated with stuttering, communicate more easily and spontaneously, and participate more fully in life. At Michigan State University, Matt works with Dr. Bridget Walsh in the Developmental Speech Lab, where he researches two major questions: (1) why do some children who stutter stop during childhood, whereas others continue into adulthood, and (2) why are some children more negatively affected by their communication difference than others, and how can SLPs help reduce the adverse life impact of stuttering.

Episode 64 was inspired by a request from Kyla’s administration: align your therapy with the curriculum. Sounds simple enough, until you remember that you see mixed-grade groups and you have limited time to meet with teachers! In this episode, the SLPs share practical strategies for connecting your therapy to what’s happening in the classroom by focusing on the underlying, foundational language skills (and good news: you are already doing a lot of this!).
