As African nations establish their sovereign independence, African nations set out to establish a continent-wide competition to reinstate the uniqueness of Africa. A great and fun competition mired by organizational problems, the AFCON is the funniest and wildest international football competition.

After the independence of African nations from their colonizers, African nations are confronted with the task of nation-building and forming new national identities. While the result is not perfect, football has helped along the way, that is what we explore today. 

We continue with our discussion of Anti-Colonialism in Africa and its relationship with football by looking at the story of Algerian Indepdence.

In the first of this two part series, we look at how football helped Egypt at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, Independence in Nigeria, and the fight against Apartheid in South Africa. 

Throughout this season of Coffeeshop Talk we explore the history of football on the continent of Africa. This week we will look at how the sport originally got to the continent and how the White Man's Burden was the main driver for the spread of the sport.
