  • The Anchor Chain of Port William

In the autumn of 2003, Luna spent a week in Port William, Maine, a fishing village on a granite cove where the tide ran fast and the fog ate sound. She had come to inventory the estate of an old lobsterman who had died alone in his house above the harbor. The house was full of clocks that ran at different times. The basement held something else: a chain bolted to the floor, leading down through a hole in the concrete into the dark below the house. The locals told her the old man had anchored something in the cove, something he pulled up one night and never put back. Luna walked the harbor at low tide and saw the chain disappearing into the mud. She never found out what was on the other end. But she heard it, one night, when the fog closed in and the chain went taut.

  • The Bell at Stillwater Point

October 2018. A small vacation rental on Stillwater Point, Maine — a narrow peninsula jutting into a cold lake that never warms above fifty degrees. Luna spent a weekend there with an old friend. The house was fine. The dock was fine. But the lake had a bell — a cast-iron bell on a buoy, ringing on nights with no wind. This is the story of why the locals never swim after dark, and what Luna saw on her last night under a moonless sky.

  • The Drowning Girl of Route 9

September 1997. A woman named Carrie Pendelton vanishes from a gas station on Route 9 in western Massachusetts. Luna grew up two towns over, and she remembers the flyers, the search parties, the way the leaves turned early that year. Twenty years later, Luna drives that road at midnight and sees a girl in a white dress standing at the edge of the Pontoosuc Lake causeway. The girl is wet. She isn't shivering. And when Luna slows down, the girl points at the water. What Luna finds at the bottom of the lake changes everything she thought she knew about that autumn. This is a story about what drifts, what waits, and what comes home when you least expect it.

  • The Night the Buoy Sang

In the autumn of 1998, Luna's uncle took a wrong turn on a logging road in Washington's Hoh Rainforest. He ended up at a defunct Coast Guard station where a single buoy, disconnected from its mooring, floated in a concrete pool. Its bell rang not with wind, but with a low, deliberate tone—like a voice trying to find its range. This is the story of what he heard that night, and what he left behind. A story about the things we try to contain, and the frequencies we were never meant to answer. A quiet horror about listening too closely.

  • The Last Haul of the Mary Katherine

In the winter of 2016, Luna spent a week aboard the Mary Katherine, a sixty-foot trawler working the Grand Banks out of St. John's. The captain was a man named Tom O'Neill, quiet and precise, with a daughter he never talked about. On the third night, the net brought up something that wasn't fish — not a body, not debris, but a sound. A low, constant hum that came from the net itself, from something tangled in the mesh that had no visible shape. The crew felt it in their teeth. Tom ordered the net cut loose, but the hum didn't stop. It followed the boat for three days, growing louder each night, and when they finally limped back to port, the Mary Katherine's hull was vibrating like a tuning fork. No one would take her out again. Luna sits on the deck, oilskin pulled tight, watching the lights of another trawler fade into the dark, and she remembers the sound — still waiting, still hungry, still humming.

  • The Bone Hook

A single night in December 2017, on a gravel pull-off outside the ghost town of Ysleta, Oregon. Luna was driving back to Portland when her headlights caught a man standing in the rain beside a rusted sedan. He wasn't hitchhiking — he was holding a fishing rod, line cast into the dry ditch beside the road. She should have kept driving. Instead she rolled down the window. What he told her over the next hour, in a voice that didn't seem to come from his mouth, changed the way she hears water at night. This is a story about what gets caught in the spaces between things — between lanes, between breaths, between the living and the gone. No one else was on that road. No cars passed. And when she finally looked back in the rearview, the sedan was already gone. But the sound of the line reeling in... that stayed.

About Cold Wake — Fexingo Horror

From the publisher's feed

Cold Wake is a maritime horror anthology where each episode is a self-contained voyage into the black Atlantic. Luna stands on the deck of a North Atlantic trawler, the sodium light casting long shadows as she tells stories of fishermen who haul up things that should never be caught — sentient knots of net, voices from the deep that answer questions no one asked, and wrecks that refuse to stay on the seafloor. The register is salt-crusted and whispered: the slow creak of a hull, the distant foghorn, the shock of cold water on skin. These are tales of isolation, of men who have seen too much darkness beyond the horizon, of creatures that wear the shape of scavenged souls. Every episode is a standalone story, but all are bound by the same icy ocean and Luna's steady, intimate narration — as if she's beside you in the dark, pointing a trembling finger at something just out of sight. There is no rescue here, only the tide pulling you under.
