Episode 8: Hurricane/Severe Weather Preparedness
In this episode Jessica and Charlie discuss why to be prepared for severe weather and how NOT to make yourself a victim.
In this episode we speak about how to mitigate risks during and after floods, tornados, straight line winds, and especially hurricanes.
First off we talk about how it is important to know where you live and the most likely risks for your home/area. We recommend looking up your specific potential for flooding and likelihood of potential tree/wind damage before gaging your plan of action.
Knowing what insurance you need
communicating that plan with family or close friends
Keeping water out of the home
with sandbags, towels, and such
Keeping debris from entering home
boarding windows, shutters
keeping debris picked up before storm
Hygiene without power and/or running water

Don’t stress it, don’t buy what you don’t eat
Stocking up on gas and keeping it fresh
Generators and keeping them in working order
Keeping emergency Medical equipment
Building your first aid skills now in case they are needed later
Community in the event of emergency
Make plans before the event and let them know where and what your plans are
What NOT to do before or during the storm
DO NOT go outside during or right after
DO NOT play first responder (if you aren’t actually one)
DO NOT wait until 1-2 Days before or right after the storm to stock gas
DO NOT rush to the store and buy a bunch of cold milk, small bottles of water, or Ice Cream
DO NOT stock a freezer without an alternate source of power secured before hand
DO NOT burn debris while everyone’s power is out
No one wants to have their houses filled with smoke in their house with no power/AC
tell kids what to expect before hand to mitigate stress
Make changes/stock up on supplies now for a day when they might be needed. Make a plan so you can be confident in your family’s ability to deal with any storm.
