Jesus suffered on the cross, to pay the penalty for sin, to redeem all who trust in him, so that we don't have to endure the eternal punishment our sin deserves in Hell forever. He said "It is finished!" The atonement is complete. We just have to receive mercy from God as a gift, by faith, by trust, with thanks, with a repentant heart. Suffering is a reality for all people in this fallen world. But those who have trusted in Jesus can look forward to a world where there is no more suffering or sorrow or pain. Yet, in the meantime, many believers are marginalised, discriminated against, and even persecuted, especially in other parts of the world. Suffering for the name of Christ, and suffering as we take up our cross daily and follow Jesus, is a reality that only believers experience. Such suffering is evidence of our salvation in Christ alone, and therefore something that can bring joy even through difficulty.

God's love is greater than any love we might have for others. He loved those who trust in Jesus when they were at their worst, so he will certainly continue to love them no matter what.

Jesus has overcome the world, and nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Bob Dylan once wrote the song 'You're gonna have to serve somebody'. Frank Sinatra sang the song 'I did it my way'. God's solution against anarchy is to set an order for family and society. Believers are called to "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5:21). We should do it for God, not primarily for others.
