Collaboration Counts

Listen Later

Collaboration enables you to inspire, learn and solve problems. There is often a fear from businesses in your sector that collaboration will lead to losing customers but collaboration can enhance your business for the better. In this episode Des goes through the five key positives for collaborating with others. Whether it’s learning from each other, saving money through shared resources or inspiring others to action everyone should be collaborating internal and external to their sector. If you are not collaborating with the right people learn how why should be doing that today?

Key Takeaways

Why is collaboration undervalued? I’m going to a talk through five things that you should consider with collaboration. There maybe others but these really resonate with me. Collaboration is where businesses work together to create even more value for each other. This can be from person to person or business to business.

  • Collaboration often inspires us to think differently. To come up with ideas, or think creatively to solve new problems. Others often think differently to you. It evokes creative thought. This is something that every business needs. New ideas aren’t worth anything, but it’s about implementation. If you aren’t not collaborating with people you are missing out.
  • Solving problems. An example I was talking to someone in my space the other day. We spoke for an hour and shared our problems. Sometimes learning how someone else has handled a similar problem can be a really good reason to collaborate. It’s amazing when you start talking about your problems, there will be someone who has solved the problem in different ways so you could learn from their experience.
  • Saving Money. Collaboration allows companies to save money. For example you could share resources like an office, or stationary, or IT. In Ireland some of my family are dairy farmers. It was interesting that the tractor wasn’t used all the time, it was infrequently used. I asked him why they didn’t share the resource of the tractor with your neighbour. But now you are seeing farmers avoiding duplication, and sharing something like a tractor. By sharing the maintenance of the tractor, your cutting that cost in half.
  • Education. This is something, as a business owner, that you should be continually learning through training or reading books. Another way is through strategically being educated by the arrangement with another company. There is no doubt that if you are partnering with someone who does something differently to you, in their marketing, management or strategy then you are learning.
  • Growing your network. A lot of the people that I collaborate with are not in my industry they are external. Getting some insight from other people outside your industry is essential, its slightly objective, and removed from the norms of your industry. There will marginal differences with people in your industry, but outside your industry they just have how they might do it in their business.
  •

When looking to collaborate with someone you don’t have to do all these five with one company. Some of the people that you collaborating with may help with one or two of these. Collaboration is about both ways, so they might inspire you, and you help them solve a problem. Collaboration is about creating value for both parties probably in different ways. Thinking about how others can help your business journey is key. We all need help, collaboration is about helping us get there. Reach out if your not collaborating with someone.

    About the Host

I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while.

I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school.

But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life.

Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system!

Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite?

The point is, you only get one life, don’t waste it pursuing things you care nothing for, invest in YOURSELF and grow as a person, be the best YOU by putting YOU first!
