In the 8th episode of our Collectively Speaking series exploring the big issues in the built environment, we hear from LDN Collective member Andy Stanton, Senior Principal leading the UK and Europe sustainability team at Introba, the deep green engineers.

Andy specialises in developing and implementing strategies and projects for sustainability and environmental performance in buildings. He is a building services engineer, Passivhaus Designer, sustainability and energy efficiency specialist in the built environment with a track record in radically improving the performance of new and existing buildings. 

His experience in the commercial and residential sectors has included diverse renewable energy schemes, from fuel cell CHP to solar photovoltaics on heritage buildings, helping to develop London’s energy performance contracting framework for retrofitting buildings. 

Andy is also an asset management and safety specialist trained in Lean Six Sigma and championed a reliable engineering, data-driven approach to construction and building operation and performance. He has worked in the public and private sectors in the UK and France, sat on the board of the Better Buildings Partnership, and was a guest lecturer at City University London for ten years while contributing to various technical publications for Low Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI), CIBSE, and BBP on sustainability and energy efficiency and is a member of the LETI Taskforce.

Jas Bhalla is unusual as an architect, as he started his career as an urban planner. He has recently joined forces with urban designer Vicky Payne, previously of URBED, who has written a new book about town centres.

In this episode, we hear from Ed Watson about the power of public and private sector partnerships. Prior to setting up Ed Watson & Associates, Ed led high profile projects that have transformed London’s urban landscape. Working with Argent at Kings Cross and securing the arrival of the Francis Crick Institute culminating in the investment of £1 billion by Google in its new offices.

He headed-up Camden’s own development programme, the Community Investment Programme and set up the Euston Strategic Board generating the principles for wider regeneration of Euston linked to the arrival of HS2. Moving to Westminster City Council he established a sustainable place based approach to managing change and development and headed-up the high profile West End Partnership. His clients include Arup, Stories, Linkcity & Bouygues, Moorfields Eye Hospital, Urban Space Management and British Land. Ed is also a Non Exec Director of LDN Collective architects Boon Brown.

In this episode Max Farrell talks to Gary Young, Director at Place 54 Architects. Gary collaborated with Sir Terry Farrell for 40 years on award winning, mixed use developments including Comyn Ching in Covent Garden (now listed by Historic England), Greenwich Peninsula, Newcastle Quayside and Brindley Place in Birmingham. New garden communities have included Cambourne in Cambridgeshire, NW Bicester Eco Town and Otterpool Park. In the last three years, Gary has played a central role masterplanning garden communities for the LDN Collective including Harrington in Oxfordshire and Sibson in Huntingdonshire. Gary's experience has led to some incredible insights and lessons learned along the way.
