The Devil’s Santa Ana Wildfire
Virtue: Peacemaking
Memory Verse: Ephesians 4:31-32
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
SERIES: Killing the 7 Deadly Sins
If you are accustomed to the Ten Commandments, you might feel cheated out of three. On the other hand, a few of your favorite sins may not have made this list at all. That may make you angry (which, by the way, is a deadly sin). This assortment of the 7 Deadlies does not come directly from any specific list in the Bible, but this compilation of sin does extend back to the fourth century A.D. or earlier. The Seven Capital Sins, as they were originally called, enjoyed enormous notoriety during the Middle Ages. Since the Reformers emphasized sin rather than sins, interest in the list faded after the Protestant Reformation. Yet the sins themselves have continued on to this very day. Some people have actually turned these sins into a fine art. When these sins get hold of us, they destroy families, split churches, and ruin lives. The bad news is that we can’t shake any of the 7 Deadlies by willpower or behavior modification. That’s because we carry them around in our hearts 24 hours a day. The good news is the power of Christ’s sinless sacrifice and resurrection gives us the freedom to confidently diagnose the root of our sins, boldly kill those sins through confession and repentance, and joyfully experience life transformation.
