Houston Texans rookie quarterback CJ Stroud set an NFL record for passing yards in a single game by a rookie on Sunday afternoon. Stroud was selected as the No.2 overall pick by the Texans in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Stroud went 30-42 for 470 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is an elite quarterback, a great leader, and an awesome person, and I hope that he brings the Houston Texans to a level of success they have never seen before. At Ohio State, Stroud was an elite quarterback and he led two elite offenses with the Buckeyes in 2021 and 2022. This year, Ohio State Football has struggled on offense, and on the surface, this is most notable in the passing game, where Stroud threw for over 40 touchdowns in both 2021 and 2022 while McCord only has 17 this season. Are the Oregon Ducks one of the best teams in all of College Football? Despite having one loss and not being ranked in the Top 5 of the AP Poll, I think Oregon Football is the most dominant team in the country along with Michigan Football. While the Wolverines are dealing with their own sign-stealing mess and have not played a Top 25 team yet, Oregon has faced an elite team on the road in Washington. They are 8-1 and just a few plays from likely being 9-0 and a team that is being talked about as a National Title contender. Matt Rhule and the Nebraska Cornhuskers had the perfect opportunity to clinch bowl eligibility yesterday afternoon. Michigan State Football was 2-6 and looked lifeless in October, meanwhile, Nebraska was 5-3 and they were building momentum after starting Heinrich Haarberg at quarterback. Regardless, the Spartans came out with a clutch 20-17 win, earning them their first Big Ten victory of the 2023 season, while Nebraska is still searching for bowl eligibility and the potential to win the Big Ten West. My reaction to this game is one of shock, and I imagine Nebraska fans are downright disgusted. Heinrich Haarberg had 3 turnovers to his name and he nearly had a 4th. Nebraska's offensive line gave up 7 sacks and 12 tackles for loss and while they had success running the football, Michigan State's defense limited Emmett Johnson enough to make the Cornhuskers uncomfortable in their own identity. Spartans quarterback Katin Houser had success in the passing game, going 13-20 for 165 yards and 1 touchdown, and there are several other good players on the roster who are one good coach away from being great. Rutgers gave Ohio State Football their all, but that wasn't enough to overcome TreVeyon Henderson, Marvin Harrison Jr, and Jordan Hancock. Despite Kyle McCord's struggles and Rutgers' control of the clock, Ohio State's offense produced 4 touchdowns and had a balanced attack. Running backs dominated this game, with TreVeyon Henderson having 128 rushing yards and Kyle Monangai having 159 rushing yards. The Scarlet Knights were impressive, and they stifled both Ohio State's offense and defense, outgaining the Buckeyes in total yards and even leading at the half by a score of 9-7. My prediction for this game was a 27-14 win for the Buckeyes, and I was pretty close in my pregame analysis. I thought that Rutgers would run for over 200 yards on Ohio State and also earn some empty yards on drives that resulted in no points. Greg Schiano is building this program up to be a competitor in the Big Ten, and his team's rise could not have come at a better time. The 2024 schedule is one full of opportunity for Rutgers Football, as they avoid Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. Ohio State, meanwhile, has to focus on being healthy entering their matchup against Michigan, while not overlooking Michigan State or Minnesota. Ryan Walters ripped Jim Harbaugh's team for cheating in the pre-game, and Michigan Football ripped apart Purdue Football in response. Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy passed for 335 yards on 37 attempts yesterday. He had some off throws and his footwork was mediocre, but he played all four quarters and got quality repetitions against a Purdue defense that was vicious along the defensive front. While the rushing attack was underwhelming, Michigan punched it in 5 times on the ground thanks to Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards, and Semaj Morgan. The defense had 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss, and 6 pass deflections with several more pressures on Hudson Card. The Wolverines' secondary was in lockdown. Despite Michigan's rusty play, they dominated, which I expected. My 59-7 prediction was excessive in retrospect, but the Wolverines scored more than 40 points, had 5 rushing touchdowns, controlled the clock, and played nearly flawless on defense. I think an appropriate reaction to this game is one of neutrality. Michigan Football has concerns along the offensive line, special teams are bad, and the run game has not impressed, however, the Wolverines' passing offense is becoming more comfortable, and the defense looks as stout as ever. James Franklin and his team are in a tough spot right now. Penn State Football is coming off of a two-game streak where their offense has looked lethargic and their defense has broken down. I still believe the Nittany Lions are a Top 10 team, but their offense has to improve and their defense and special teams must stay strong in order for the team to have a chance at beating Michigan on November 11th. Mayland Football is not without its own struggles, either. Turnovers, penalties, poor defense, and an offensive line that has fallen off in the past month are not helping head coach Mike Locksley build his program. However, with the Michigan game on the horizon, Penn State might overlook Maryland, allowing the Terps to potentially pull off a massive upset. My prediction is that Penn State dominates in a 30-17, slow-paced game. Maryland is currently on a three-game losing streak and they have allowed a combined 60 points to Illinois and Northwestern, losing those games 24-27 and 27-33 respectively. Despite their struggles on offense, I think Penn State's defense will give the offense multiple opportunities to score and beat up Maryland Football's weak defense. Washington Football and USC Football will take the field at 7:30 PM PST to face off in a critical Pac-12 matchup. USC is 7-2, but they only have one conference loss and a win in the Colesium will help revive their Pac-12 Championship hopes. However, the Washington Huskies have a formidable offense and a competent defense. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr is the commander of their vaunted passing offense. On the year, he has 2,945 passing yards 24 passing touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions. Their offense passes for more yards than any other team in all of College Football, and they have the trench play to situationally run and give Penix endless time in the pocket. Can the Trojans beat the superior opponent at home? My prediction for this game is Washington wins in a shootout by a score of 56-45. I do not trust Alex Grinch's defense, and while Washington Football has struggled to defend the pass and stop power backs in their tracks, I think their defensive line, linebacker, and secondary groups are more robust and will get needed stops to win this game. Barring a bad performance by Michael Penix Jr, I expect the Huskies to throw for 400-500+ yards and use the ground game to keep the Trojan defense honest. Michigan Football is still reeling from the reports about their sign-stealing operation. Purdue Football, meanwhile, is losing. The Wolverines are the most efficient team in all of College Football, bringing the most efficient defense and second most efficient offense according to ESPN. Purdue has a poor offense and defense, though they have generated 24 sacks and have high-upside players all across their defense. One big question for this game is will Michigan overlook Purdue? My prediction for Michigan vs Purdue is that the Wolverines win dominantly 59-7. Purdue Football's offense and defense are a mess right now, and I think Michigan is going to be motivated coming off of their bye week. I expect Michigan to produce well over 400 yards of offense in a balanced attack, which will give them plenty of momentum heading into what will likely be a Top 10 matchup in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. Purdue Football is still in a rebuilding stage, but you can see the pieces that are being put in place and the potential that resides in the program. I think Ryan Walters will have success at Purdue in the future, but unfortunately for him, the Boilermakers will fall to 2-7, while Michigan will rise to 9-0. Rutgers is coming off a bye week, and their opponent this week is the Ryan Day-led Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State Football is undefeated and ranked No.1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2023 season. They are known for their elite defense and passing game featuring the marvelous Marvin Harrison Jr. Rutgers, on the other hand, is known for pounding the rock, rushing for 178.8 yards per game while passing for less than 150. With an extra week to prepare, I imagine Greg Schiano will have a solid game plan entering this matchup, and I would not be surprised to see a trick play and/or a well-executed opening drive. My prediction for this game is that Rutgers Football competes with the Ohio State Buckeyes, but ultimately falls short due to Ohio State Football's superior talent, coaching, and passing offense. I think both offenses will total over 300 yards, but Rutgers' one-dimensional offense will cost them in the redzone, while Marvin Harrison Jr, Cade Stover, and Emeka Egbuka will give Ohio State's passing offense the opportunity to take over from TreVeyon Henderson and the ground game. Happy Halloween! Today, I want to give my way too early thoughts on the Michigan vs. Ohio State game. These are arguably the two best teams in all of College Football, with the Wolverines being No.1 in Game Control, No.2 in FPI, and No.1 in Team Efficiency and the Buckeyes being No.2 in Game Control, No.1 in FPI, and No.3 in Team Efficiency, all per ESPN. Michigan Football is also No.1 in my Potential Power Rankings System, and Ohio State Football is No.2. I expect that the matchup that takes place on November 25th will produce a College Football Playoff Champion, and potentially a rematch in the Playoffs as well. It cannot be overstated how elite these units are. Ryan Day and Jim Harbaugh are a combined 132-31 as Head Coaches at their current football programs. Both have 2 or more College Football Playoff appearances and Big Ten Championships as well. The issue is, that only one of these programs can escape victorious whenever they face off. The two titans of the Big Ten Conference are going to make a ton of notice, produce a plethora of big hits, and explode via the most unexpected plays. Who will win come November 25th?
