  • College Talk Ep. 24 - 5, 6, 7, 8! We Can Help and Validate!
Applying to college, for financial aid, and even coming face to face with the idea of leaving behind family can be incredibly daunting for students. This week I am joined by THREE amazing second year AdviseMI College Advisers, Juanita Gool, Jackie Deneau, and Brittany Hall, and we talk about what we've noticed students struggling with and how to help them. Parents, families, teachers, school staff, college professionals, and friends this one is for you. We talk about how to help students feel validated and how to process with them, while understanding that this journey is theirs and not yours.
Seniors. You are doing amazing, and whatever you're feeling: stress, excitement, fear, pride, or sadness... all of those feelings are OKAY! While this journey is yours, know that other people are having similar feelings and worries, and that it is natural . Don't be afraid to reach out and share with someone. Sometimes, sharing is the key that opens doors to understanding, help, and new opportunities.

  • College Talk Ep. 21 - Why Even Bother?
Why go to college? It's expensive and a ton of work... is it worth it? That's what we're going to talk about today because the answer is YES! Today we talk about the why, and I define what I mean when I say "college" (apprenticeships, trade schools, community colleges, private colleges/universities, or public universities). I also have four different voices talk about why they think college is important, so if you don't want to listen to me... try listening to them, or the five sources below!
The funnel method I talked about? That was from an amazing presentation called "Flipping the Funnel: Upending Traditional Student Advisement Through a Problem Solving Approach" by the amazing folks at Berea College.

  • College Talk Ep. 17 - FERPA... What's the deal?!
Parents! This one is for you! We're talking FERPA and whatever that means today. There's a big difference between the rights FERPA gives you in K-12 and the rights FERPA gives your student, and not you, in college.
    Let's go figure that out!

  • College Talk Ep. 16 - Summer Summer (and success!) Time
Disclaimer! I marked this episode explicit because I read off a title with a swear word in it.
I moved and started a new job! I'm back at it, but I'll be doing podcasts every other week until I'm a little more settled. While I'm adjusting to some pretty big changes, I thought it might be a good time to give you some tips on how to prep yourself for the ones next year! • College Talk Ep. 15 pt. 2 - An Intro to (Un)Healthy Relationships
Today I am joined by Danielle with WMU's FIRE Place through their Department of Health Promotion and Education. We had to split this episode into two parts; however, combined, both talk about relationships in all facets. We talk about healthy and unhealthy characteristics in a relationship, consent, and so much more. Part 2 gets into more mature content, so please keep that in mind as you begin to listen.
