Colloquium with director Mounia Meddour ("Houria")

As part of the Mediterranean Festival for Freedom (MedFest), Casa Árabe is organizing a preview screening of the film “Houria” at its headquarters in Madrid, followed by a discussion with the director, Mounia Meddour.

We will also be joined by actor Marwan Zeghbib. The discussion will be moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s Culture and International Relations Coordinator.

Houria, by Mounia Meddour, (Algeria and France, 2022, 104 min).
Houria is a young and talented dancer. To fight for her dreams and earn some money, she enters the world of underground gambling. However, one night, after winning a fortune, she is attacked. After this unexpected event, her world ends up changing forever.

Mounia Meddour
After studying Journalism at the University of Algiers, Mounia Meddour earned her Master’s degree in Information and Communication at Paris 8. In 2000, she was trained in Cinema at La Fémis and in Production at the European Training Center for Film Production.

The documentaries which she has directed include Tikdja, La Caravana de la ciencia (“The Science Caravan”), Las partículas elementales (“Elementary Particles”), and La cocina patrimonio (“Heritage Cuisine”). Her work Cine en Argelia, un nuevo talento (“Film in Algeria: New talent”), deals with the young directors of her generation who lived through the “decade of darkness.” Her short-subject film Edwige was selected for various international festivals and won numerous awards. Her first feature film, Papicha (Dreams of Freedom) was selected for the “Un Certain Regard” section and represented Algeria at the Oscars in the Best International Film category. With this film, she won the César Award for Best Debut Film, as well as the César Award for Best New Actress, won by Lyna Khoudri.

Mounia Meddour was a member of the reading committee of the CNC 2020 until 2021. She was awarded the medal of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by Roselyne Bachelot, France’s Minister of Culture. In 2022, she directed her second feature film, Houria.
