We all need second chances.

The prophet Jeremiah saw his nation as clay being shaped by God for a purpose, but things didn’t go the intended way.

This happens, not just to nations, but in relationships, jobs, and apple trees. And sometimes we just have to start over.

This weekend, we’re going to look at the message of resurrection hope that we have for second chances, because we do all really need them.

This Independence Day weekend, we are beginning a new series called “Prophecies and Pottery,” based on the prophet Jeremiah. Prophets are called to speak out in God’s name when a nation’s values veer off course, because a nation’s choices have large consequences.

And, since it is Independence Day, today we’ll also harken back to a sermon given by the only preacher to sign the Declaration of Independence, Rev. John Witherspoon.

As we look back, you may well find some prophecy for our time and our lives.

On this day, we celebrate the rich diversity of human relationships that God has created, and we rejoice in their incredible variety. Today we affirm that God has created us to be Beautiful Humans, formed in love and designed to share love with others. Join us as we bless relationships of all kinds, and reaffirm our commitment to love and care for one another.

The prophet Amos was a pain in the keister. He spoke brashly to the comfortable moderates of his day and told them to see the evil of injustice being done to their neighbors and help. 2,700 years later his prophecy continues to make a critical point – one that still speaks through our excuses.

This Father's Day, we're going to look at Boaz, who would become his son Obed's father late in life. Boaz was a person of character. He was caring, and he was safe. He ensured the safety of the people around him.

We will celebrate his legacy that comes to us through our scriptures. It’s a legacy that challenges us to develop the same qualities in ourselves.

Ruth was actually not blood relations with any of her family. She chose to adopt a family that came together to renew joy and hope.

The same Spirit of adoption that led them is working now. As we celebrate new leaders in this church community, that same Spirit calls on them to continue what was begun so long ago for the good of all!
