15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.REFLECTIONSWritten by Sam DarmoDuring our street evangelism efforts, we sometimes come across people who would identify as Christians and who would be part of some traditional church system. We’ve noticed with these sorts of people that the moment we start talking about Jesus Christ our Lord, they would immediately stop us and ask us if we believe in the Virgin Mary, Saint Charbel or Saint George.Yet in today’s passage, the Apostle, Saint Paul, breaks into poetry – and the poem is overflowing with words that came as a response to how God through Christ has brought us from the kingdom of darkness to His Son’s Kingdom where there is light. And through Him we have redemption and forgiveness of sins (Col 1:13-14).If someone had stopped Paul and asked him if he believed in a Mary or a Charbel or a George, he would have said, “Who??” The Apostle Paul is shouting “IT IS ALL ABOUT JESUS” – and even these words, inspired in him by the Spirit of God, still don’t fully express his inner emotions as he tries to tell us how central Christ is for him.In verse 15, Christ Jesus is God in the flesh, the unfailing Adam and the true image of God. And the first over all God’s creation. In verse 16, Paul shouts in joy and great zeal that everything is created in Christ, who is God over all creation. And in verse 17, Paul tells us that Christ is God who is before all creation, and He is God because in Him all things hold together.Pray with me:That this Christ will always be at the centre and the focus of our worship and proclamation,That we will declare this Christ to the world,And that this Christ is the One they will come to worship, in awe of what God has done in Him, with Him and for Him to bring us into right relationship with our Triune God.ABOUT THE AUTHORSam is an Assistant Minister with our Assyrian and Arabic churches, as well as our Fairfield English Morning Church.
