Colossians 4:2-6

Listen Later

2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders;make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.REFLECTIONSWritten by Adam DaviesThis short passage in Colossians strikes me as being so rich in dependence on God. Paul urges the Colossians to be, not just regular in prayer, but devoted to prayer. He also urges them to be watchful and thankful. Perhaps watchfulness in prayer comes in two parts: before you pray and after you pray. When something particularly significant happens, it’s interesting that in the language I use, I often say, “We should pray about that”. But I wonder if it misses the point of being watchful and devoted. Perhaps watchfulness in prayer would make me say, “We GET to pray about that!” If we were devoted to being dependent on God, and watching out for things we can pray for, then how much more would we be excited about the opportunity to bring something before God?What could watchfulness after prayer look like? Well, Paul says we are to be watchful and thankful. After prayer, we watch for God’s answer and his powerful work in the world. And as soon as we see it, “we GET to thank him for his work!” There is really an all-round sense in this passage of taking every chance to acknowledge God’s power and depend on him.Why not grab that chance with both hands today?ABOUT THE AUTHORAdam is a member of our Fairfield Evening Congregation.
