Paul speaks to the third of three deadly doctrines, that of asceticism, or extreme unbiblical self-denial, a type of legalism. Paul says that this asceticism is strictly the teaching of men, but it can actually appear to be wise and holy. Christ’s death and resurrection and the grace of God has set us free from the supposed need to appease God with unbiblical self-denial even to the point of self-injury. Plus, these practices are of no value against fleshly indulgence.
