Can South Africa truly tackle inequality, poverty, and unemployment without first investing in its youngest citizens?
In this powerful episode of the Colour-Full Podcast, hosts Senamile Zungu and Stacy Jayne Saggers sit down with Warren Povey from Breadline Africa and Debbie Zelezniak from the Santa Shoebox Project to unpack the realities facing children and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres across South Africa.
From the shocking prevalence of pit toilets in ECD centres to chronic underfunding, hunger, and transport barriers, this conversation explores why children remain the most marginalised group in society. Despite overwhelming evidence that the first five years of life are critical to lifelong outcomes, many ECD centres receive little to no government support, while those that do qualify for subsidies often receive as little as R24 per child per day.
Warren and Debbie shed light on the systemic challenges within South Africa's ECD landscape, including bureaucratic hurdles that prevent centres from accessing funding, infrastructure, and essential resources. The discussion challenges us to rethink how we approach some of South Africa's biggest social challenges, arguing that meaningful change begins by investing in children from the very start.
If we are serious about building a more equal, prosperous, and inclusive South Africa, we must start by putting children first.
