In the vast and beautiful landscapes of Wyoming, the battle against cheatgrass has become a top priority for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Cheatgrass, often referred to as the "cancer of Wyoming," is an invasive plant species that has been wreaking havoc on the state's native ecosystems. In this episode, we sit down with Phillip Lockwood, a Fire Management Specialist for the BLM stationed at the Kemmerer Field Office, to delve into the importance of this fight against cheatgrass and how it is helping protect the landscape and wildlife, particularly the Mule Deer population.

Cheatgrass, in particular, poses a significant challenge due to its aggressive nature. It has a propensity to impact large areas of land and disrupt native plant communities. Moreover, it is highly flammable and spreads wildfires with ease. Native plants struggle to recover as quickly as cheatgrass after a fire, leading to a dangerous cycle of more frequent fires and the eventual dominance of cheatgrass monocultures.

The fight against cheatgrass in Wyoming is not just a battle against an invasive plant; it's a fight to protect the diverse landscapes, wildlife, and activities that make this state unique as well as Mule Deer habitat. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of organizations like the BLM and their partners, the landscape is receiving the attention it deserves, and the ongoing battle against cheatgrass offers a beacon of hope for Wyoming's wild things and wild places.
