Episode 2 - 'Het verleden - Dichtbij' with Beyond Walls
A collaboration with Gyonne Goedhoop and TENT Rotterdam
In this episode, we spoke with Julia Jouwe and Djé-rimo who have been connected to us through Beyond Walls.
We discussed what it means to be part of the ‘Indonesian’ diaspora, living in the country of the colonizer.
We also talk about how the colonial past has been misconstrued by the Dutch and how we were only taught their interpretations of the past. How different communities from many islands and countries have simply been grouped up and called ‘Indonesians.’
While Indonesia has gained independence from colonial rule, this had completely different implications for Papua and the Maluku Islands, where our guests are from. They share with us how they look back on this moment in the history of the region.
With this episode we wanted to bring their narrative more to the front. In doing so we are again confronted by how complicated colonial history actually is.
A Tapestry of a Diaspora is Gyonne's brainchild but brought to life by the collaboration with Combined Impact and all of the other collaboration partners.
Within A Tapestry of A Diaspora we ask questions about what the day to day strategies on resiliency are for different young, diasporic people (living in big cities like Rotterdam). In what ways are our different diasporas connected? What are the methodologies that we use in our daily lives to keep our joy going? To care for ourselves and others in our own ways? What are the ways these resilience strategies and projections can work for us or against us?
P.S.: This episode is predominantly in Dutch.
