Welcome back to the 12th and final episode of The Purpose Summit series on Stories from the River. Host Charlie Malouf interviews Kent Chevalier, the Team Chaplain of the Pittsburgh Steelers, at the Purpose Summit held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum Gear Shop. Kent shares his backstory, highlighting his transition from a youth pastor to becoming an NFL chaplain.
Kent describes how a Steelers player, Vance McDonald, introduced him to the role after attending the church where Kent was a pastor. Initially unfamiliar with the concept of a sports chaplain, Kent was nonetheless intrigued and felt a calling that led him to take on this unique ministry. Working with Athletes in Action, Kent serves as the team chaplain and has access to the team. Kent expresses how supportive Coach Mike Tomlin and the Rooneys have been as he enters his 6th year of being the chaplain for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kent explains his daily activities as a chaplain, focusing on building relationships and providing spiritual guidance to players, coaches, and their families. He emphasizes the importance of addressing the spiritual side of the athletes' lives, which is often neglected amidst their intense schedules. Through various programs like Bible studies, chapels, and couples' ministries led by Kent and his wife Erica, they support the team both on and off the field. In this episode, Kent shares an impactful transformation story of one of the players, and he also expresses his favorite part of his job.
Over a decade of ministry experience and reconnecting with Davin Salvagno brought Kent to The Purpose Summit, where he expresses excitement about sharing his journey and insights as one the keynote speakers this year.
The episode also delves into the broader topic of integrating purpose and ministry within business environments, as seen at The Purpose Summit. Kent's stories reflect the transformative impact of his role and underscore that business, much like sports, can serve as a powerful platform for ministry and deeper purpose.
