Psalm 20 is a liturgical blessing for the king, but it serves as a model for the way God has enabled and commissioned us to speak blessing and life to one another. When our words are rooted in the Kingdom and the authority of the Spirit, they have a supernatural power to stir up hope and life in those we bless.

C.S. Lewis said about Psalm 19: “I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.” Lewis certainly was speaking of literary beauty, but he also was acknowledging the transcendence in David’s words. They masterfully reflect the ongoing revelation of God’s grandeur and goodness, both in all he has created and in how he graciously shepherds his children toward the life that is truly life.

Psalm 15 asks a question that was common for God’s people centuries ago and that continues to echo in the minds of many today: who is worthy to enjoy the presence and blessings of God? Though the answer hasn’t really changed, the good news of Jesus gives us a fresh lens into this question and the Psalm that asks it. Psalm 16 then beautifully reflects the gift of the Gospel by describing the security and hope of those who find themselves in God’s presence.

Resurrection and an Easter hymn about the future of politics.

The Psalms not only point broadly to the coming of a Messiah, but they offer vivid, often beautiful pictures of our individual and collective futures when viewed through the lens of the resurrected Jesus. Psalm 118 speaks of God’s salvation for the psalmist, and Psalm 46 goes a step further, offering us a hymn to sing about the future of politics (no…really).
