THE STORY SO FAR:

This week in scripture, Nehemiah rebuilds the wall of Jerusalem with enemies circling, letters arriving, and neighbors urging him to come down and talk it over. He sends back the same answer every time: I am doing a great work, so I cannot come down. Ezra and the returning exiles lay a temple foundation in a ruined city, and Nehemiah gathers the people to hear the law read aloud until they weep. None of them are handed proof that it will hold. They keep building anyway, because they are holding to something that does not move.

Chapter 28 puts Noah in the same place. A storm takes every instrument in the snowcat, and the only fixed point left is a star that has not moved his entire life. Then Rachel asks him the question she has been carrying for two thousand miles — whether he actually believes any of this will work — and he has to answer it honestly, at the worst possible moment to be honest.

Tonight’s “Come Follow Me” story comes from the book of Nehemiah. The people had come home at last, their broken walls rebuilt strong and safe. On a soft, golden morning, they all gathered in the open square by the Water Gate — mothers, fathers, and all the children old enough to understand. A man named Ezra, who had kept God’s words safe like a treasure, climbed a wooden platform and opened the great scroll, and everyone stood up out of love for the words of God. As Ezra read, and kind helpers explained, the people remembered how much God loved them, and they began to cry happy tears. But the leaders said, “Do not be sad — this is a holy, happy day. Go home, eat something good and sweet, and share with anyone who has none. For the joy of the Lord is your strength.” And there was very great gladness that day.

This story was created to help little ones end the day feeling safe, loved, and close to God — and to remember that His words are a treasure given just for them. Play it as your child settles into bed and drifts gently to sleep.

This week in "Come Follow Me" we walk beside Nehemiah, the cupbearer who wept over the broken walls of Jerusalem and turned his sorrow into prayer. When the king’s heart was moved, Nehemiah went home to build — not because he was powerful, but because, as he said, "the good hand of my God was upon me." He faced mockery and threats from those who did not want the wall to rise, yet he set a watch and kept building. And when his enemies tried to lure him down to the plain, he answered with the words that still ring today: "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." In fifty-two days, the wall was finished.

You have a wall of your own to build today — a home, a calling, a promise, a person who needs you. This meditation was created to help you begin the morning with intention, to refuse the small voices that would call you down, and to trust that the good hand of God is upon you, too. This week in "Come Follow Me" we rest in the days after the long exile in Babylon. For seventy years the people lived far from home, their city and temple in ruins — but God had not forgotten His promise to bring them back. He stirred the heart of Cyrus, a king who did not yet know Him, to send the people home. Under Zerubbabel they made the long journey to Jerusalem, gathered the stones, and laid the foundation of the Lord's house once more. When that first foundation was laid, the old ones who remembered wept, and the young ones shouted for joy, until no one could tell the two apart. The work was slow, and even stopped for a time, but the God who began it did not abandon it.

Wherever you feel unfinished tonight, this meditation was created to help you release the day and rest in the God who rebuilds — stone by stone, year by year. Play it as you settle into bed and let the long day fall gently away.

A gentle story of a king who welcomed everyone home to God. A Come Follow Me bedtime story for July 20–26 — "Our Eyes Are Upon Thee" (2 Chronicles 30, King Hezekiah).

This week’s Come, Follow Me story is one of the warmest in all the scriptures. In the city of Jerusalem, a kind king named Hezekiah wanted to hold a great, happy feast — the Passover — to thank God. And he didn’t want just a few people to come; he wanted everyone, even the families who lived far to the north, even the ones who had drifted away and been forgotten for a very long time. His messengers carried gentle letters that never scolded, only said: you are still wanted, there is still a place for you. Whole towns softened their hearts and journeyed home, and the feast was so full of joy they kept celebrating a whole extra week.

It’s a story that teaches children one clear, tender truth: God loves to gather His children, and there is always a way back home. Use this during your family’s bedtime routine, and let your little one drift off knowing they are always invited, always welcome, always loved.

This week in Come, Follow Me we walk beside King Asa of Judah. When idols crowded the land, Asa gently turned his people back to the Lord, and the land had rest. But when an army too great to number marched against him, Asa did not stop to count his soldiers — he prayed, “Lord, it is nothing for Thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power… we rest on Thee.” The seer Hanani reminds us that the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, looking not for the strongest heart, but for the one turned fully toward Him.

Wherever you are tempted to lean on your own strength this morning, you’re invited to loosen your grip and rest your eyes on Him — not because you are weak, but because He is strong, and near, and willing. Listen before the demands of the day rise, and let your first choice be a small act of trust.

Lay down the battle that feels too big tonight. A Come Follow Me sleep meditation for July 20–26 — “Our Eyes Are Upon Thee” (2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat).

Tonight we rest in the days of King Jehoshaphat. When three nations joined together and marched on Judah, the king was honestly afraid — but he did not act in panic. He gathered his people at the temple and prayed a prayer worth carrying into any sleepless night: “We have no might against this great company; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are upon Thee.” And the answer came through a man named Jahaziel: “Be not afraid… for the battle is not yours, but God’s… stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Judah went out with singers at the very front, praising God before anything had changed — and the Lord went out before them.

If you’re carrying something too heavy to fix before sleep, you’re invited to simply set it down. Not to win it, not to plan it — only to let it belong to God tonight. Play this as you settle into bed and let your prayer be as simple as his: I do not know what to do, but my eyes are upon Thee.

Then God gives Hezekiah a quiet, wonderful sign: the shadow on the dial of Ahaz goes backward.
