nor fashioned for separation,
nor destined for decay.

It was formed for light.

For there is One who is called Light—
and not merely light as we perceive it,
but the true and living Light,
of whom it is written:

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

This Light is none other than Christ,
the Wisdom and Word of God,
through whom all things were made,
and toward whom all things are drawn.

Consider, then, the nature of the soul.

It is not satisfied by shadows.
It is not nourished by illusions.
Even when it turns toward lesser things,
it does not cease longing for what is eternal.

For the soul, having come from God,
retains within itself a memory—
faint though it may be—
of divine goodness.

Why then does it wander?

Why does it cling to that which cannot give life?

It is not because it was made for such things,
but because it has become accustomed to them.

Just as eyes long kept in darkness
fear the brightness of the sun,
so too the soul, having grown used to lesser lights,
hesitates before the radiance of truth.

Yet the Light does not withdraw.

The Word of God, in His great mercy,
has entered even into the depths of human weakness.

He has taken on flesh,
not to condemn the soul for its wandering,
but to call it back.
