In the old days, we had what was known as strategic warfare. Strategic warfare is the science or art of employing all the military, economic, political, and other resources of a country to achieve the objects of war. War is never entertaining. It is a horror show that no one wants to watch, a raging, never ending disaster that disrupts and even destroys human relations for generations to come. Of course there will always be people who claim that wars are righteous or "for the greater good", but the so called greater good is malleable and is remolded to fit a particular administration message of hate and division. Wars are divisive; they cannot and never have unified people. Thus, the only "good" that can be fought for during a war is that war's end. Goodness and war cannot coexist. They are complete strangers in the realm of ideas. The comedians of the day are currently engaged in a war that they have been waging on their audience for the past six years. What is so sad about this (note the absence of words like "happy" or "funny" here) is that, instead of fighting for their right to be funny, they have instead chosen to engage in a petty war of words with their political critics. A constant stream of angry youtube videos decrying political correctness and divisive comedy acts demanding an end to human decency now pour out of this battlefield on an almost daily basis. Every comedian talks about cancel culture in their act and so standup comedy, which once covered diverse topics, has now been reduced to a constant grumpy comedian bitch fest, where wealthy celebrities scream at their mostly poor fans to laugh at them before they sue them for defamation of character. Bullying is their favorite tool of intimidation. The comedians sick their fans on all critics of their performances. They use their money and social influence to fight for causes, not to make people laugh. This is worldview warfare at its finest. These people are nothing more than politicians at this point and there is nothing funny about politicians. I cannot turn on a comedy special anymore without some conspiratorial comedian screaming at me that the liberal mob is coming for them and their children. It has gotten so repetitive that I now refuse to watch any standup comedy made after the early 2000s. There was a time when comedy was funny, when it was actually about making people laugh. I know that seems like a bit of a stretch with all of the political debates being held during comedy specials now; trust me when I say that making others laugh used to be the job of all comedians. In fact, as a child, I can clearly remember not knowing or even caring about what comedians thought about politics. I am not saying that comedy has never been political, but that political humor actually used to humorous. It actually made most people laugh; it was about bringing people together, showing them what they had in common: the ability to share a laugh. Now laughter is secondary to comedy. Comedic performance has become an act of warfare, a war of words. I understand that the respective gangs of comedy warfare fans (fans of Bill Burr, Bill Maher, Dave Chapelle, Kevin Heart, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, etc.) are having a blast because they get to be bullies again just like in high school, but I hope you realize that people like me are not entertained. It is not entertaining to watch liberals and conservatives argue with each other. It is not entertaining to see the same old, tired, useless two party system duke it out to see which type of political humor is funnier. It is not interesting to see the rabid fans of whatever comedian scream at people who are offended. It is boring. It is boring. It is boring. I am bored to tears. You only think that you are educating me on the dangers of "cancel culture". In reality, as soon as you bring out that argument, I close my eyes and drift off to sleep, dreaming of a funnier time where comedians told jokes.
