Members Reviews:
Weak heroine and spineless hero. Not romantic. [Contains spoilers]
Maggie is one of the weakest "heroines" I've ever seen, and Kevin is the most spineless "hero" ever in all romance literature. I wanted to grab hold of Maggie and shake some sense into her, and at the same time I wanted to slap Kevin silly... or maybe knee him in that place where it'll hurt most. I apologize in advance for the liberal use of upper-case lettering in this review; I couldn't help it because I'm just so annoyed with these two useless characters!
Let's start with Maggie. Kevin left her at the altar eighteen years ago, and instead of getting angry and bitter as any normal person would have been, she PINES after him. She pines after him to such an extent that she has never given any other man a chance. She still thinks about him EVERY DAY! When he comes back to town, she acknowledges that she's still in love with him... yes, with this man who ran off and left her at the altar without an explanation, and never bothered to contact her again in EIGHTEEN YEARS. She's in love with him despite the fact that he turned up with a fiancée. She's in love with him despite knowing said fiancée is pregnant!
Then fiancée tells Kevin she "needs a break" and goes back to Dallas. Kevin immediately makes a play for Maggie because he apparently still has feelings for her -- well, if that's true, why has he not tried to get in touch even once in the past eighteen years? It seems very convenient that he only acknowledges his feelings for her now, when he's had to come back to town to sell his grandfather's ranch. So if nothing had happened to force him to return, he would never have sought her out, despite his supposed feelings? He would have gone ahead and married his fiancée? This is supposed to be the hero? This spineless, selfish man who takes no initiative, who says he loves Maggie but does absolutely nothing to show it? He says he regrets leaving Maggie the way he did, and has thought of her so many times, but never called because he thought she wouldn't take his calls. Oh yeah, great excuse. He deserves the Wimp of the Year Award.
So he makes a play for Maggie again, and Maggie just falls into his arms with hardly a protest! They spend a weekend between the sheets and then his fiancée calls and immediately Kevin disappears... AGAIN! And again, without a word of explanation to Maggie! What, is it so hard to write a note? "Sorry, I had to go, Lisa said she needs to talk to me"? So Maggie is in floods of tears and her best friend asks, why did you get involved when you knew his fiancee was pregnant? And Maggie replies, "I just wanted someone to love me again. I wanted to feel that person in my arms in the morning. I was trying to find my romance." Woman! This guy hurt you badly so many years ago.
