In this last episode of the Comm4Cops, 10-part audio-curriculum to enhance police communication, you'll hear Ruben and Bob give a summation of what we've learned from some of the leading communication experts, bringing their perspectives from the different angles they've seen in their lives and careers.

We learned a great deal about listening. We heard quite a bit about the soft skills and the need to have them greatly enhanced and elevated to match the hard skills training of policing. Recruiting police candidates from different pools was also mentioned - an interesting idea. What we heard most of all, though, was listening. Real, honest, in the moment listening. Not listening and waiting impatiently to give an answer but real, empathic listening.

They must hear what you are trying to say - a simple but powerful comment. We learn, yet again from another expert, the importance of listening well if a two way conversation is going to be on point and effective, essential for the police when dealing with the public during stressful situations.

Hosts Ruben Navarrette and Bob Harrison are joined by Sid Martinez, the author of the highly regarded "The Neighborhood Has Its Own Rules" and an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of San Diego. This episode proved to a model of seeing the importance of seeing the challenges through a different prism. Do we need to improve trust? Yes, but it is the police who mistrust the community more than the public's mistrust of the police. What about recruiting?
Perhaps Police Departments would be better off recruiting Sociology students and putting them through the Academy. Sid Martinez is a treasure trove of knowledge on steps forward and the need to find agreement on one issue, move the needle and then move onto the next issue.

Hosts Ruben Navarrette and Bob Harrison get a Chief's perspective as this episode's guest is Chief Roxana Kennedy of the Chula Vista Police Department, a large city within San Diego County. In the words of Chief Kennedy, the challenges of the present are opportunities for dramatic improvement, with a greater than ever need for both the police and the public to put themselves in the shoes of the other. Through mutual understanding, community policing will become better. But she also emphasized the importance of officers actively engaging with the community as much as possible and the need to get out of the car and talk to kids, talk to shop owners! Her most important role? Communicating values and expectations to her officers and the need for the entire community to buy into the values.
