Assaulting a police officer? Let's look at the possibilities that certain testimonies can be true and also, we can look into certain consequences.

Nigeria

Assaulting a police officer is a serious criminal offense in Nigeria. According to Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act, it is a felony to assault, resist or willfully obstruct a police officer while acting in the execution of his duty. The penalty for this offense is at least three years jail term. Abducting a police officer is also a felony and can attract more severe punishment. Therefore, it is advisable to respect the law and cooperate with the police officers in Nigeria.

America

Assaulting a police officer in America is a serious crime that can result in harsh penalties. Depending on the state and the degree of harm caused to the officer, a defendant can face felony or misdemeanor charges, and a prison sentence ranging from two years to life. Additionally, a defendant may have to pay fines, fees, and restitution to the victim or their family. Assaulting a police officer is considered a violent felony that shows a disregard for the law and public safety.

Britain

Assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty is a serious offense in Britain. According to section 89 of the Police Act 1996, a person who assaults a constable or a person assisting a constable can face up to 6 months' imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £5,000. Additionally, a person who resists or willfully obstructs a constable can face up to 1 month in prison and/or a fine of £1,000. Furthermore, assaulting an emergency worker, which includes police officers, is an aggravated offense under the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offenses) Act 2018, which can result in up to one year's imprisonment (or two years' if the assault was racially or religiously aggravated). Therefore, assaulting a police officer in Britain can have severe legal consequences and should be avoided at all costs.

1. The Presidential Election Petition Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned further pre-hearing session on the petition of the Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi who filled, seeking to nullify Tinubu’s election victory, till Wednesday.

The court also fixed the same date for another petition by the Action Peoples Party, APP, while it adjourned the case of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, till Tuesday.

While adjourning the cases, the court urged the parties to identify all the witness statements and documents they would rely on or object to during the actual hearing of the petitions.

 

2. Meanwhile, the court, on Monday, barred Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State from standing before it as the representative of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The Plateau state governor had, immediately the first petition that was lodged against the outcome of the 2023 presidential election was called up, stood up and announced himself as Tinubu’s representative.

“My Lord’S, my name is Simon Lalong and I am here to represent Tinubu,” the governor stated.

However, Justice Haruna Tsammani led a five-member panel that declined to recognize him as Tinubu’s representative.

“You cannot represent an individual. Tinubu is not a corporation that would need a representative,” the presiding justice held.

 

OSUN POLL: The Supreme Court has fixed Tuesday to deliver its judgement on an appeal seeking to sack Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State from office.

A five-man panel of Justices of the apex court adjourned to resolve the legal dispute sorrounding the governorship election that held in the state on July 16, 2022.

It will be recalled that the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had on January 27, in a split decision, voided the declaration of Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as winner of the gubernatorial election.
