The New Testament opens with a list of names, and Matthew deliberately includes some his first readers would have found scandalous and fascinating: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and the wife of Uriah. This week Mike Hardie looks at why Matthew refuses to edit out the shame and the outsiders, what it means for grace to tell the truth without excusing harm, and how real change looks like making things right.
This sermon discusses sexual abuse.
Sam Knock begins our new series in Matthew. In this first message, he orients us to the book: who wrote it, the world it came from after the temple’s destruction, and how Matthew tells the story of Jesus as a new Moses leading the whole world to freedom. Then he turns to Matthew 16, where Peter gives the right answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?”, but has the wrong Messiah in mind. That same question still stands for us today.
