Thomas is faculty director of the data science program at Northwestern University responsible for the data science curriculum and has designed distance learning materials for the program, including courses in machine learning and knowledge engineering. Miller has published numerous books about data science with Pearson Education. Miller founded Research Publishers LLC (RP), located in Manhattan Beach, California and serves as editor-in-chief of Data Science Quarterly, published by RP. Earlier in his career Miller worked as a network engineer for NCR Comten and as a field engineer and account representative for Hewlett-Packard Company. He also directed the A. C. Nielsen Center for Marketing Research and taught market research and business strategy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Miller holds a doctorate in philosophy (specializing in psychometrics) and a master's degree in statistics from the University of Minnesota, MBA and master's degree in economics from the University of Oregon, and undergraduate in philosophy from Ursinus College.
