Commonway Church

It's easy to think of church as your weekly "inspiration" for your faith. We don't go as far as calling it entertainment, but if we're honest we very much expect and judge church services based on the quality of the message or the talent of a worship band. But here's the thing: while we may have expectations on what church should be, Jesus in turn has expectations about who we should be that are way more significant. Once we know what those are, all of a sudden Jesus' original intention for what 'church' should be becomes clear.

Looking at Matthew 16.16-18, Jesus says He will build His church…except the word isn’t actually “church” like we think about it. It’s ecclesia – a gathering. And a koinonia - a partnership. It's not a place you go, but a gathering of people you are apart of.

This message is bittersweet as it's the last message our Connections Pastor, Adam Bouse, shares before he transitions out of the role. But conversely, the message is an optimistic reminder we all need to hear: we each, every one of us, have the capacity and purpose to share God's love with the world. And this has been God's plan all along.

Beginning in Mark 10:17, a story is told about a man asking Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus' answer is seemingly confusing and not insightful. But as we explore His answer, the question He is really asking is the same question that has united those of Commonway Church since our beginning.

In this message, we remind ourselves of the bigger, grander, redemptive future God has planned for His followers and the world - beyond even what we can comprehend. But as we consider this future, we have to be diligent in making sure we are planting seeds today that will lead us there and fulfill the role God has for us in this His epic story.

Throughout our exploration of the life of Moses, there's a sense the arc of his story is leading to a dramatic conclusion. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. While this seems like a letdown, he actually arrives at something greater: the realization that the presence of God and a desire for his will to be done in your life is the greatest gift and journey we could be given.

Prayer in its most raw form is simply being honest with God. There are times where the daily burden of life's responsibilities and stresses seem too much to bear. As Moses did, it's OK to admit this to God and express your frustration and desperation. The important thing to remember is to simply turn to Him in these times.
