Human speech is comprised of four parts.
Respiration - We need a lot of air for good speech. breath and relaxPhonation - Vocal chords open and vibrate to create soundResonance - Cavities in your face, head, and chest to enhance soundArticulation - How we shape the sound with our mouthsWhen one of the four parts is not working properly, there are issues with speech. The main parts I work on, as a voice coach, are respiration and resonance.
Without proper breathing, the voice can have a choppy and the speaker easily loses breath during long speeches. Without proper resonance form all 3 registers, the speaker could sound monotone and fail to deliver emotions when telling a story.
The 3 registers are the chest, face, and head. Each register has a different tone and pitch, enabling the speaker to change the way the voice sounds at any moment. It's very important the the speaker to first work on proper breathing when starting to make improvements with the quality ofd the voice. Even if the phonation, resonance, and articulation is good, without proper breathing, the voice will likely have issues sounding authentic, full, and rich.
